of the former edition, and is furnished at one-half the price at which the same portion of birds was then sold. Very few works on Natural History give illustrations of every object described, and it is believed that this magnificent volume contaius enough to be an ornament and attraction either to the parlor or library. The original copper-plates have been transferred to stone, so that the birds in this edition are fac-similes of those in the former one, with the addition of a beautifully tinted background, and a great variety of landscapes, plants, and trees, adding much to the beauty and interest of the work.

This volume was issued under the personal superintendence of his son, the late John W. Audubon, and every plate colored from the original drawings of his father, then in possession of the family, but since purchased by the New York Historical Society. As the distinguished author and his two sons, who were also naturalists and artists, are now dead, there is no probability that this magnificent work will ever be again issued; and as the number of copies printed is quite small, they will naturally increase in value.

Also a large black walnut stand for exhibiting the above, cost $50. 4283* ATLAS JAPANNENSIS, being remarkable addresses by way of Embassy from the East India Company of the United Provinces to the Emperor of Japan, containing a description of their several Territories, Cities, Temples, and Fortresses; their Religions, Laws, and Customs; their Prodigious Wealth and Gorgeous Habits; the Nature of their Soil, Plants, Beasts, Hills, Rivers, and Fountains, with the Character of the Ancient and Modern Japanners, collected out of the several writings and Journals by Arnoldus Montanus, Englished, and Adorned with above a hundred several sculptures. By John Ogilby, Esq. Folio, panelled calf gilt, carmine edges, brilliant impressions the numerous plates, rare. Lond. 1670.
