THIS work, which when complete will form three volumes containing about 155,000 entries, is a Subject Index of the books first published or reissued between January, 1881, and December, 1900, which have been added to the Library of the British Museum. Chestinn Indoves nnblished by It is hoped that Vol. II. will be issued during the summer of 1903, and Vol. III., completing the work, by the end of 1903 or early in 1904. It must, however, be distinctly understood that by no means every book received in the Library during the period covered by the Index finds a place in pages. The omissions are due to one of two causes. its In the first place, many are to be accounted for by the fact that the work is designed to form a supplement or appendix to the General Catalogue of Printed Books, and that consequently such information as may be readily obtained from that Catalogue is not repeated here. The General Catalogue, though in the main a catalogue of authors, contains a few headings and many titles which are distinctly of the nature of the entries in a class catalogue-such as the headings "Bible ' and "Liturgies," and the cross-references from the subject of each biography to the name of the author. It has not been considered necessary to repeat these, or to adopt personal names as headings. But although editions of the text of the Bible and of the Liturgies of Christian Churches are not included, works on the |
