1859

It becomes a matter of duty in Christian men to vindicate the ways of God to man in regard to His own revelation. This Mr. Garbett has done, and done ably in the work before us. The method which our author has adopted, in these lectures, of dealing with Scepticism, is He takes out modern sceptics on their own ground, and original and unique in other words, peculiar to himself. shows that those very things which they make a ground of objection to the Bible are themselves evidences of its Divine origin.-THE CHRISTIAN OBSERVER. 2973

The Family of God; being the Seven closing Serinons of his Ministry in St. Bartholomew's Church, Gray's Inn Road, London, 12mo, 1s (pub 4s)

We need not say that Mr. Garbett's sermons are full of Scripture teaching. The subject of these last words of a faithful minister is deeply interesting. It consists of a comparative view of the family of God, in the most interesting points, with similar points in the history of our own families. These are the delightful topics, which, we will venture to say, only a Protestant clergyman would have thought of, and no one but the father of a family would have successfully handlet. --THE RE

"This volume has been for some years before the public and has reached a sixth edition. It has made good its place in the literature of the day and can neither be materially benefited by commendation nor damaged by adverse criticism. A book which has commanded such wide acceptance must be distinguished by intrinsic merits of a superior kind. It cannot be numbered with the ephemeral, floating things which shine for an hour and then pass away... By this volume Mr. Gilfillan has done noble and abiding service

to the cause of truth as well as literature."-The Preacher's Lantern.

with a closing chapter on the Moral System and an English Bibliography, from Spenser to Butler, 2 vols, 8vo, containing in the aggregate 850 pp., cloth, new, 17s (pub 21s) THE REV. J. ANGUS, D.D.. M. R. A.S., President of Regent's Park College, Editor of the well-known edition of new to most English students. Bishop Butler's " Analogy," writes:-"These volumes are They will, however, be eminently welcome; and the surprise is, that they have not been published here before. Every reader of Butler's dressed to modes of thought prevalent when he wrote, the 'Analogy' knows that much of his argument is adresults largely of preceding inquiries. The opinions he confutes he never formally describes. This is one of his excellencies. He does not give error, but it is distinctly before him. He answers it, and answers it with a fullness, which can be appreciated only by those who are familiar with the details of the error he refutes. This peculiarity of Butler's great work makes such a history as Prof. Gillett gives indispensable to the thorough mastery of Butler's volume. It may be sately said, that Butler is rich in suggestiveness in proportion as his readers are familiar with the various phases of unbelief. Prof. Gillett has written the history with great care and skill, and has given the views of our foremost writers from Spenser to Butler, with special fulness. Every page, nearly, throws light upon the great subject of Natural Theology, and the whole forms an admirable Comment on the Analogy." Messrs.
