DIRECTIONS Concerning the proper Inftruments to be brought to the Bishop, for obtaining Orders, Inftitutions, and Licences, &c. and alfo concerning the things to be done after Inftitution or Licence . obtained.

For Orders.

A Signification of the Candidate's name, and place of abode; according to the first article of the Archbishop's directions.

Certificate of having made publication in the church, of his defign to enter into holy Orders; according to the third article of the Archbishop's directions.

Letters teftimonial of his good life and behaviour; according to the tenor of the 34th Canon, and the fourth and fifth articles of the Archbishop's directions.

Certificate of his age from the register-book, under the hands of the Minister and Church-wardens of the parish where he was born.

Title upon which he is to be ordained; according to the tenor of the 33d Canon: for a form thereof see page 315.

Note, That by the first and fecond articles of the Archbishop's directions, all the forementioned inftruments are to be tranfmitted to the Bishop at leaft twenty days before the time of Ordination. In cafe the Candidate come for Priest's Orders, he is to exhibit to the Bishop his letters of Deacon's Orders.

For Inflitution.

HE Prefentation to be tendered to the Bishop, and left with him to be confidered.

The letters of Orders of Deacon and Prieft to be exhibited to the Bifhop; according to the 39th Canon.

Teftimonials of the former good life and behaviour of the perfon applying for Inftitution, according to the 39th Canon; and if he come out of another diocefe, then a teftimonial from the Bishop or Ordinary of the diocese or place from whence he comes.

After Inftitution,

THE person inftituted is to pay or compound for the payment of the First Fruits at the office of First Fruits, unless the benefice be discharged from this payment, as being a rectory not exceeding ten marks, or a vicarage not exceeding ten pounds in the King's Books, or elfe as not exceeding fifty pounds per annum clear value, in which cafe it is discharged from the payment of Tenths, as well as First Fruits c.

To carry the mandate of induction to the proper office of the person to whom it is directed; and after induction d to receive a certificate thereof from the perfon who inducts.

To read the Common Prayer, and declare affent and confent, within two months next after actual poffeffion, according to Stat. 13, 14 Car. II. cap. iv. fect. 6. unless difpenfed with by the Ordinary, upon fome lawful impedi

ment.

To read the thirty-nine Articles, in time of Common Prayer, with declaration of his unfeigned affent thereunto, within two months after induction, according to Stat. 13 Eliz. c. xii.

To make the declaration in the church, That he will conform to the Liturgy of the Church of England, as it is now by law established; and then to read the certificate of his having fubfcribed it before the Bishop, within three months after inftitution.

The ufual form of induction is this:

The perfon impowered to induct, taking the hand of the perfon to be inducted, lays it on the key of the church, in the church door, or the ring of the door: or if the church be ruinated, it is done by laying his hand on the wall, or the fence of the church yard, and saying, "By virtue of this inftrument, (which he has " from the Archdeacon,) I induct you into the real, actual, and "corporal poffeffion of the rectory of N. with all its fruits, mem"bers, and appurtenances." Which faid, he puts the Incumbent into poffeffion of the church, who, when he has tolled a bell, comes forth; and the Inductor indorfes a certificate of fuch his induction on the warrant of the Archdeacon, attested by those who were prefent.

Note,

Note, It may be convenient to procure a certificate from the Church-wardens or other inhabitants, of having performed all the forementioned things, which are to be done in the church; but there is no law that requires fuch certificate, nor need it be in any certain form.

To take the Oath of Abjuration within three months after inftitution, either in one of the Courts of Westminfter, or at the General Quarter Seffions of the county, city, or place where he shall refide.

For a Licence to a Curacy.

HE perfon nominated is to tender to the Bishop the Nomination from the Incumbent; in which is to be expreffed the falary propofed to be allowed for ferving. the cure.

To exhibit to the Bishop his letters of Orders.

To bring letters testimonial from his college; or if he come not immediately from a college, then to bring them from the neighbouring Clergy, where he has dwelt for fome time before, if in the Bishop's own diocefe.

In cafe he come from another diocefe; then to bring letters teftimonial from the Bishop or Ordinary of the diocefe or place from whence he comes; according to the 48th Canon, and the 8th article of the Archbishop's directions.

Within three months after he is licensed to a perpetual curacy; to read in the church the Declaration appointed by the Act of Uniformity, "That he will conform to the "Liturgy of the Church of England, as it is now by law "established ;" and alfo the certificate of his having fubfcribed it before the Bishop, according to Stat. 13, 14 Car. II. cap. iv. fect. 11.

For a Licence to a Lecture.

HE perfon applying for a Licence is to bring to the Bifhop a certificate from the Minifter and Churchwardens of his having been duly elected, or an appointment under the hand and feal of the perfon or perfons who have power to appoint.

To exhibit his letters of Orders of Deacon and Priest.
To bring teftimonials of his fober and regular beha-

viour.

To read the thirty-nine Articles in the prefence of the Bishop, according to Stat. 13, 14 Car. II. cap. iv. fect. 19. Within three months after being licensed, to make the Declaration appointed by the Act of Uniformity 13, 14 Car. II. cap. iv. fect. 11. "That he will conform to the Liturgy of the Church of England, as it is by law esta"blifhed," in the church where he is appointed Lecturer; and at the fame time to read the certificate of his having fubfcribed it before the Bishop.

For a Difpenfation for a Plurality.

THE HE perfon applying for a Difpenfation is to obtain of the Bishop, in whofe diocefe the livings are, two certificates of the values in the King's Books, and the reputed values and distance of such livings; one certificate for the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, and the other for the Lord Chancellor. And if the livings lie in two dioceses, then two certificates, as aforefaid, are to be obtained from each Bifhop; each certifying the value in the King's Books, and the reputed value of the living in his own diocese; and both of them, the diftance of the two livings.

To bring two papers of teftimonials from the neighbouring Clergy, concerning his behaviour and converfation; one for the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the other for the Bishop of the diocese.

To exhibit to the Archbishop his letters of Orders of Deacon and Priest.

To exhibit to his Grace a certificate of his having taken the degree of Mafter of Arts at the leaft, in one of the Universities of this realm, under the hand of the Register of fuch University, respectively in pursuance of the 41ft Canon.

In cafe he be not Doctor or Bachelor of Divinity, nor Doctor or Bachelor of Canon Law, he is to procure a qualification, as chaplain to fome Nobleman, or to fome other perfon empowered by law to grant qualifications for pluralities, which is also to be duly registered in the Faculty office, in order to be tendered to the Archbishop, according to the Stat. 21 H. VIII. cap. xiii. And if he hath taken any of the forefaid degrees, which the Statute allows as qualifications, he is to procure a certificate thereof in the manner before mentioned; and to exhibit it to the Archbishop.

Form of a Title for Orders.

HESE are to certify your Lordship, that I A. B. Rector [or Vicar] of in the county of your Lordship's diocefe of B. do hereby nominate and appoint C. D. to perform the office of a Curate in my church of aforefaid; and do promise to allow him for his maintenance in the fame,

the yearly fum of and to continue him to officiate as Curate in my faid church, until he shall be provided with fome other certain place, where he may exercise his minifterial function, unlefs, on account of any fault by him committed, he shall be lawfully removed from performing the office of a Curate in my faid church by your Lordship or your fucceffors. And I hereby folemnly declare, that I do not fraudulently give this certificate to entitle the faid C. D. to receive holy Orders, but with a real intention to employ him in my faid church, according to what is before expreffed. Witness my hand, this day of in the year of our Lord

The foregoing form may be used for the nomination of a parochial or ftipendiary Curate, omitting the last claufe.

The above form of a title is not exactly the fame as that which was formerly in general use, it having been thought advifable to make fome alterations, in confequence of what fell from the Court of King's Bench, when judgment was given in the caufe of Martin against Hind. See Cowper's Reports, p. 437. Douglass's Reports, p. 137.
