KLINCKSIECK, 11, RUE DE LILLE 1924 JAMES FITZMAURICE-KELLY I The work of this illustrious scholar is reviewed below by a qualified hand; I am asked to furnish some record, and some impressions, of the man. Our acquaintance only began when Fitzmaurice-Kelly arrived in Liverpool in 1909; and he was one who rarely spoke about himself; so that these memories must be combined with evidence supplied on the best authority by others. It is right specially to acknowledge the contributions and suggestions of his intimate friend, of more than a quarter of a century's standing, Mr. Edmund Gosse, the poet and critic; of Professor Wyld, now of Oxford, and formerly Fitzmaurice-Kelly's housemate in Liverpool; and, above all, of Mrs. Fitzmaurice-Kelly, who has gathered the greater portion of the material. James Fitzmaurice-Kelly was three parts Irish; his grandmother on the maternal side was French. Perhaps the reserve, which was so marked a trait in his character, was Irish; it was in any case accompanied, as in many of his countrymen, with much easy sociability and wit.
