The chief woman character is Miss Royce, a pretty little governess living in the family of haughty Lady Maria Verschoyle at The Towers, a fine old English country seat. Miss Royce attracts a man who is scheming to marry another woman for her money; this woman honestly loves him and is hopelessly loved in her turn by another man. Out of these complications many dramatic scenes ensue, told with a wealth of conversation that is often quite witty. Hungerford, Mrs. Marg. The purpose in this collection of essays is to show the intellectual and moral scope of a word which Mr. Walden contends was lost in the Old Ver sion and never recovered in the New; also to give the variations and misconceptions of a word which he believes is of great significance.
