A story of England at the end of the seventeenth century during the reign of Queen Anne, told in the language of the period. Clorinda Wildairs is the ninth daughter of a hard-drinking, roystering country gentleman, her mother having died in giving her birth; all her sisters but two have died in babyhood, but her

physical and mental strength carry her to womanhood-a daring, independent, high-tempered, beautiful creature, with many admirers; with all her faults she has the virtues of courage and honesty, and these play a large part in the development of her character, which is graphically portrayed.
