A view of the opening of the Revolution. The author has, through ten years of reportorial work, come in touch with scores of New England people still living on old homesteads occupied by their parents or grandparents at the time of the alarm of April 19, 1775, and there he has heard the story of personal experience reported by the descendants of those who at their own doors or in the highway faced the army of the king. While delineating in his characteristic manner the story of Lexington and Concord, he has most happily shown the part taken by other towns in that memorable day's experience.

Cyrus West Field was one of those "self-made Americans who, in the making of their own fortunes, have built up the United States. He was a typical American, and his biography, written by his daughter with a loving and skilful hand, is a story among the best for boys to read. Mr Field's greatest work was the Atlantic cable, for he made the enterprise a success. Apart from the value of the book as the lifestory of the man, it is one of the best accounts in print of the ways and means whereby the cable to Europe came to be laid. Mrs. Judson also describes the share her father had in developing the elevated railroad system in New York City.

The course of this bill, during the following three years in the House of Commons, with its many attending dramatic incidents and final defeat, is admirably and graphically portrayed in this diary. Mr. Gladstone's appearance from day to day is noted, Lord Randolph Churchill's physical breakdown and death recorded, and interesting details given of Chamberlain, Keir-Hardie, and other leaders.

"Worth while" is the pathetic love-story of a poor middle aged clerk who had been brought up in the work-house. He had conceived the idea of writing letters to an imaginary mother, from a child-the letters finding a final resting-place in the Dead Letter Office-and his story is thus told. There is a second novelette, "Lady Jane," which is a sad revelation of family history.
