Formula elegantissima; ma che riesce incomoda; giacchè volendosene calcolare il quinto, il sesto ec. termine fa d'uopo di molta fatica; laonde convien meglio, dovendone fare applicazione a delle serie parziali, servirci del ritorno delle serie; cioè del ritrovamento della serie inversa particolare.

Il logaritmo altro non è che un numero di una progressione arit. metica, corrispondente ad un altro numero di una progressione geometrica.

(*) L'Encyclopédie méthodique dit que le mot logarithme est formé des deux mots grecs λόγος et άριθμος, ce qui est vrai, et qu'il signifie discours sur les nombres, ce qui est asses ridicule. Mais l'auteur n'avait lu ni Néper ni Kèpler, et il ignorait sans doute que, chez les géomètres grecs, le mot λoyos signifie raison, ou rapport.
