The account of New Mexico's part in the Great War herewith presented was written almost wholly within the three months after Armistice Day, 1918, and was submitted by the Board of Historical Service, of which the present editor was executive secretary, to the State Council of Defense. It did not appear feasible at that time to publish more than certain excerpts which were included in the New Mexico Blue Book of 1919. The chapters as originally planned were finally published in the first five numbers of the New Mexico Historical Review, and the work is now issued in separate form, together with the original preface and New Mexico's Roll of Honor. Chapter VIII has been changed in part from its first writing so as to include data subsequently gathered, but otherwise the work of editing has been restricted to a few necessary changes of phraseology. If certain passages read strangely today, nevertheless they show, historically, opinions and hopes which obtained during the months immediately following the first Armistice Day. Santa Fe LANSING B.
