Wood's Institute was the only treatise, until the publication of Blackstone's Commentaries, to furnish a comprehensive view of the common law. It was "the most important and the most popular of his books. It was written, he tells us, to supply the want of a methodical book on English law, which could be put into the hands of students in the Inns of Court and the Universities." Holdsworth, HEL XII:419. Blackstone recognized the books considerable merits. "Upon the whole," he said, "his work is undoubtedly a valuable performance; and great are the obligations of the student to him, and his predecessor Finch, for their happy progress in reducing the elements of law from their former chaos to a regular methodical science." |
