Biesenthal (Dr. Joh. H. R.)— Das Trostschreiben des Apostels Paulus an die Hebräer, Kritisch wiederbergestellt und sprachlich, archäologisch, und biblischtheologisch erläutert. 8vo. pp. xii. 364. Leipzig, 1878. 12s. Dr. Biesenthal takes a new and original view of the controversy respecting the authorship of the Epistle to the Hebrews," which leads him to uphold the tradition of the East, that from the first accepted it as written by St. Paul. This point he establishes by a careful review (in chapter i.) of "the influence of Roman legislation at the time of Christ upon literary productions," in which he traces the gradual and increasing severity of the laws regarding freedom of thought and speech or free opinion, the employment of spies, "dilatores," and the instructions to the "publicani" in the provinces, to seize and send to Rome any works the contents of which came within that category. Hence the absolute necessity of great prudence and caution on the part of writers, transmitting documents into the provinces. Dr. Biesenthal thus accounts for the work being anonymous, as St. Paul was at the time a prisoner in Rome, and the hatred of both Jews and Heathens to Christianity was then especially concentrated upon the Apostle himself, who from having been the fiercest of its persecutors, had become the most eminent of its apostles and advocates. This "Enmity of the Jews and Heathens to Christianity, as a reason for St. Paul withholding his name," is ably discussed in chapter ii. The third chapter is headed, "St. Paul, and no other is the author of the words of Consolation to the Hebrews,'" and in it is shown that the style and metaphors are essentially those of the Apostle; and the conflicting views of the Churches of the East and the West are most carefully and critically examined. The fourth chapter answers the question: "In which language was the Epistle originally written?" In proving the Hebrew to have been the original, Dr. Biesenthal, preeminently one of the greatest Talmudic scholars of the day, coincides with the view of its origin taken by Clemens Alexandrinus; and, pp. 64-358, re. produces the supposed lost Hebrew text in the body of his critical commentary, in which he claims to have discovered errors in St. Luke's Greek version of the "Words of Consolation to the Hebrews," which was really a pastoral address, and not sent as an epistle by St. Paul.

Mit einem Titelbilde von Professor Eduard Steinle. 2 vols. 12mo. Vol. I. pp. xx. and 442; Vol. II. pp. xvi. and 572. Freiburg, 1877. 9s.

The author of "Gokel, Hinkel, and Gakeleia," brother of Bettina von Arnim, born in Frankfurt, 9 Sept. 1778, still retains a considerable popularity in Germany as a poet, dramatist, and novelist. He died at Aschaffenburg, 28 July, 1842, having some four-and-twenty years previously adopted a religious life, dwelling in the monastery of Dülmen from 1818 to 1824. The first volume contains his life up to the commencement of his religious struggle in 1814. The second volume commences with that struggle and its result, and gives his residence in Dülmen, and the last eighteen years of his life after leaving the monastery. This elaborate biography by two of his Jesuit friends was issued as a centenary memorial of his birth, and as a companion to the two volumes of his "Ausgewähte Schriften," recently published.

Professor Faulmann has produced in this volume admirably arranged alphabets of printing types of all known languages, which have been produced in the Vienna Hof- und Staatsdruckerei during a long series of years. Prof. Auer's magnificent" Alphabete," a copy of which was exhibited in the recent "Caxton Exhibition," is already a quarter of a century old, and since then the additions which have accumulated are no less numerous than important. These are all included in the volume. The value of each type is given in Roman characters, and Professor Faulmann's historical and descriptive letterpress is of the greatest value to archæologists and linguistic scholars. The typography, itself, is the very perfection of the art. Fell.-Indices ad Beidhawii Commentarium in Coranum, confecit Dr. Winand Fell. 4to. pp. 71. Leipzig, 1878. 12s.
