Mejow (V. I.)-Receuil du Turkestan, compre

nant des Livres et des Articles sur l'Asie Centrale en Général et le Province du Turkestan en Particulier. Tomes 1-150. L'Indicateur Systématique et Alphabétique. Imperial 8vo. (size of fcap. folio), pp. viii. and 184. St.Pétersbourg, 1879.

During the last ten years, under the auspices of General de Kaufman, M Mejow has most diligently brought together every accessible scrap of information, printed during the period, respecting Central Asia in general, but more particularly all that relates to Turkestan. The collection of books, pamphlets, and scraps, is bound up in two hundred volumes, and the present volume contains an analytical account of the first one hundred and fifty. This systematic and alphabetical indicator or register is numbered from No. 1 to 2,007. This numbering system for books of reference dates from the very earliest times, and is in full use in the present day. It was probably the invention of the Librarian of the Royal Babylonian Library, that wonderful collection of impressed tablets, long lost, bat recovered in our day by the excavations at Nineveh under Layard and Smith. We have it recorded in one of the tablets, as mentioned by Prof. Sayce, that the library-keeper would require the number of the tablet to enable him to produce it readily when required for reference. M. Mejow adds a full Russian index of 28 pages, the 2,007 entries in the "Indicator" being all in that language, and also a French reference index of 8 pages. The latter gives the non-Russian reader a sufficient knowledge of the importance of the work.

"The reader who is curious in the history of opinions will hardly find a more instructive guide in the obscure labyrinth into which he is tempted by the study of Oriental reasonings and fancies. Mr. Johnson has thoroughly mastered the subject of which he treats, by the thoughtful researches of many years."-New York Tribune.

The comprehensiveness of its scope, its careful summaries and analyses, make it an addition tone literature of theology that cannot fail of attracting the attention and provoking the criticism of scholars; while it will not be found either too recondite or too obscure for the thoughtful general reader."-Boston Transcript.

"Whether we regard these volumes as chapters of history or as essays, we have no hesitation in pronouncing them to be a most wonderful monument to their author's learning, ability, and patriotism."-Civil Service Gazette.

"These volumes should, as a remarkable monument of Anglo-Bengal cultivation, take their place in every collection of standard works, for they reflect honour on the race that could learn so well, and we may add, in some degree credit on the alien rule which has fostered and developed the knowledge and intellect of which the author and his family present so distingushed examples."—Allen's Indian Mail.
