REPORT ON FISHERIES OF MARYLAND.-We have received the Report for 1880 of Messrs. Ferguson & Hughlett on the Fisheries of Maryland, which, together with the Oyster Laws, make about 58 pages; by far the most valuable portion of the Report is the Appendix containing Brook's Development of the American Oyster, but this monograph appeared before in Johns Hopkins Biological Laboratory Reports.

PRIVATELY ILLUSTRATED BOOKS.-Many book collectors amuse themselves by illustrating the books in their libraries, thus rendering them unique specimens. Mr. Daniel M. Treadwell, of Brooklyn, New York, has published a "Monograph" of those contained in the most sumptuous libraries in and about New York, with many curious and interesting facts concerning them. It contains 165 pages, printed with entirely new type on fine paper, and bound in a vellum cover, and a limited number are printed on large paper. Messrs. Trübner & Co., of Ludgate Hill, are London agents for this little work.

RIO DE LA PLATA.-Senator M. Biedma, of Buenos Aires, has issued a prospectus of the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata 1776 to 1810, "Apuntamientos critico-historicos para servir en la cuestion des limites entra la Republica Argentina

y Chile," by Senator Vicenta G. Quesada. It is to form a volume of 500 pages in octavo, and will be issued as a supplement to the "Nueva Revista."

VICTORIA MINES.-In the 1880-1 Report of Mr. Thomas Couchman, the Chief Inspector of Mines, to the Hon. Commissioner of Mines for Victoria, Australia, we find, as usual, much interesting matter relative to machinery for the prevention of accidents in mines. The Chief Inspector reports that there has been a general and careful compliance with the "Regulation of Mines Statute" in all the principal mines, which has operated beneficially in decreasing the number of accidents.

IN MEMORIAM.

DAVIS.-Dr. Barnard Davis died recently, aged 80, at Hanley, Staffordshire, where he had lived all his life. François-Marie Arouet, who at the age of 24 assumed the name of Voltaire, was born at Paris, 1694, and died 1778; he was the author of a great number of works-plays, satires, poems, essays, criticisms, philosophical treatises, etc.; his satirical powers as a writer and his sceptical philosophy have made him up to the present day the subject of many discussions, and of many essays in which he has in turn been earnestly condemned or enthusiastically admired. Mr. Parton, Who is well known through his biographies of Jackson, Franklin, Jefferson, Burr and others, has endeavoured to get at a true estimate of the man, uninfluenced by prejudices of any kind; he has spent years in study and research and has sifted an immense amount of formation relating to him; his work has not only the merit of being partial, but is the first complete history of Voltaire given in English; the style in which the book is written will in itself attract, as it is full of the most interesting details. It also contains two most taire, and 2, a list of his own works-the titles in both being transuable bibliographical features-1, a list of books relating to Vol
