Heine (H.)-The Romantic School. Translated by S. L. Fleishman. 12mo. cloth, pp. ix. and 273. New York. 7s. 6d.

This work was originally written and published in France to make the French people acquainted with an important and interesting phase of German literature. Heine expended on it a wealth of illustration and detail; while it ostensibly deals with the romantic school. it does in fact briefly but graphically touch on nearly all German literature, from the Nibelungenlied down to about the date of its publication, 1833. The translator says: "It is, in fact, a review of Germ in literature by one of the masters of that literature." It has long been considered a classic of its kind, and the Encyclo pædia Britannica in its article on Heine, pronounces it one of the two works which seem his best and most characteristic writings."

Lieber (Francis), The Life and Letters of.

Edited by T. S. Perry. 8vo. cloth, pp. iv. and 439. With Portrait. Boston. 14s.

"Francis Lieber was one of the greatest publicists, not only of this country, but of the age (b Berlin, 1800), and it is pleasant to have so good a picture of him as Mr. Perry's volume presents. He said once that his life would never be written, but here it is, self-drawn. The diaries and letters left by Mr. Lieber were so full, that Mr. Perry has added little, wisely confining himself to making the necessary selections and arranging them chronologically. Its interest is not the naïve self-revelation of a Pepys. Dr. Lieber showed much reticence even to his alter ego, his diary, and more than once we find in his letters fuller details than the diary gives. What we have is a record of a life of extraordinary mental vigour, and of great enthusiasm, the last quality having a strong German colouring." -Boston Advertiser.

Linton (W. J.)-Rare Poems of the 16th and 17th Centuries; a Supplement to the Anthologies; Collected and Edited, with Notes, by W. J. Linton. Square 16mo. vellum, pp. xx. and 264. Illustrated. Boston. 10s. Under the title "Golden Apples of Hesperus," Mr. Linton some time ago printed a limited edition of " poems not in collections," meaning the general selections accessible to the ordinary readersnot really students of English poetry; the present book is but in part a reprint of that same work-poems of the 19th century being omitted, and poems of the 16th and 17th centuries added, with a selection from the anonymous writings of the same period, out of early miscellanies, or from reprints by Park, Ellis, Collier, Asher, and others. Among the known authors from whose writings he gives selections are Sir Thomas Wyatt, Sir Philip Sidney, Michael Drayton, John Donne, Beaumont and Fletcher, William Drummond, Thos. Stanley, Sir John Suckling, and Andrew Marvell; the second part comprises poems by unknown authors taken from old collections such as Dowland's song-books, Wilbye's madrigals, England's Helicon, Campion's airs, and Forde's music of sundry kinds. The book is bound in white vellum cloth, and the illustrations consist chiefly of headings and tail-pieces, with here and there a miniature landscape,

"It is the aim of the present work to show, in an earnest, loving, and reverent spirit, that the historic and storied land of the Magyar has had, and still has, poets-God-born sons of song-who have written in immortal verse of her sufferings and her hates, her triumphs and her loves."-[Preface.]

We dissent toto coelo from the editor when he says that, "although Petöfi may be successfully compared with R. Burns, yet in his honest belief is superior to the author of Tam O'Shanter."

Machiavelli (Niccolo), The Historical, Political, and Diplomatic Works of. Translated from the Italian by Christian E. Detmold. In 4 vols. 8vo. With Steel Frontispieces. Boston. £3 3s.

A fresh translation, unrivalled in care, scholarship, and completeness, of the works of this extraordinary and much misunderstood writer. The translator writes in his preface, "I think it can with truth be said of Machiavelli, that he has been more abused than known, and that, had he been better known, he would have been less abused. For the reader of his works would have become satisfied that Machiavelli was neither devil nor saint, but simply a most gifted, honest man and patriot, who was not afraid to write, in the most terse and lucid manner, what he honestly thought calculated to advance the interests of his country, which he had so much at heart." Newton (W. W.)-Troublesome Children; Their Ups and Downs. Oblong quarto, with Illuminated Cover. and many Coloured Illustrations, by Francis G. Attwood. Boston. 12s. 6d.

A child's book of singular beauty and merit, by an author whose sympathies for the little folks are ever alert and warm. A critic says: "Its combined tenderness and humour, together with its high moral tone, will give it an entrance to our homes in a way suggestive of the welcome accorded to the Franconia books and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." As a superb piece of book-making, showing clearness of printing, brilliancy of illustration, and perfect taste, "Troublesome Children" has hardly, if ever, been excelled.

This story was for many months a most attractive feature of the Atlantic Monthly: "Doctor Zay" is a lady physician; her earnest. ness is tested pretty much in the same manner as Mr. Hovels tests his heroine in "Dr. Breen's Practice."

Rachel's Share of the Road. 16mo. cloth. Boston, 5s.

New round-robin novel; very spirited and interesting, some of the characterization being exceedingly fine and graphic. The interest and value of the book lies in the situations, and the handling of these situations, in connection with the abuse of railroad corporation power. There are two very cleverly-drawn characters which stand out from the rest-that of Mrs. Shackles and Joe-Mrs. Shackles alone ought to sell any book.

Being constructed with great labour and care from the latest Government, State and Railroad Surveys, this is the most authentic and most complete map of the Republic hitherto published.
