Recital of Clauses in the II. N° XVII. Anno vicefimo fexto GEORGII II. Regis. Chap. 20. An ACT for encouraging and improving the Manufactory of LINEN in the Highlands of Scotland. $1. WHEREAS by an Act made in the I. Fifteenth and Sixteenth Years of and 16th Geo. the Reign of his prefent Majesty, intituled, An Act for granting to his Majesty an additional Duty on Foreign Cambricks; and for allowing thereout a Bounty upon a certain Species of British and Irish Linens exported; it was, amongst other Things, enacted, That out of the additional Duty by the faid Act impofed on Foreign Cambricks, there fhould be given and paid, in Manner and upon the Conditions therein mentioned, a Bounty of One Penny upon every Yard of British and Irish Linens made of Hemp or Flax of the Value of Sixpence per Yard, and not exceeding the Value of Twelve Pence per Yard, and of One Halfpenny for every Yard of fuch British and Anno Regni vicefimo fexto, &c. 147 Irish Linens, under the Value of Sixpence per Yard, which from and after the Twenty-fifth Day of March, One thousand feven hundred and forty-three, and within the Term of Seven Years, to commence from the faid Twenty-fifth Day of March, or at any Time thereafter before the End of the then next Seffion of Parliament, fhould be exported out of Great Britain to Africa, America, or Portugal, or which fhould be exported to Spain, from and after the Time that it should be lawful to export fuch Linen to that Kingdom: And whereas by an Act made in the Eighteenth Year of the Reign 18 Geo. II. of his present Majefty, intituled, An Act for effectually preventing the Exportation of Foreign Linens, under the Denomination of British or Irish Linens, the Payment of the faid Bounty is fubject to certain Regulations in the faid Act expreffed: And whereas, by another Act made in the 18 Geo. II. Eighteenth Year of the Reign of his prefent Majefty, intituled, An Act for allowing certain additional Bounties on the Exportation of British and Irish Linens, additional Bounties were granted thereon, and the Payment thereof, and of the former Bounties, was made fubject to certain other Regulations in the faid Act expreffed: And whereas by an Act made in the 20 Geo. II. Twentieth Year of the Reign of his prefent Majesty, T 2 22 Geo. II. Majesty, intituled, An Act for granting to abling his Majefty to raise a further Sum of One Million for the Ufes and Purposes therein mentioned; and for further appropriating the Supplies granted in this Seffion of Parlia ment; and for applying a certain Sum for defraying certain Charges and Allowances to the Officers and Private Gentlemen of the reduced Troops of Horfe-Guards; and for continuing the Bounties on the Exportation of British and Irish Linens; and for making forth Duplicates of Exchequer-Bills, Lottery-Tickets, Receipts, Annuity-Orders, or other Orders, loft, burnt, or otherwise deftroyed; it was amongst other Things enacted, That the Bounties on the Exportation of British and Irish coarse Linens fhould continue to be paid in like Manner, and under the like Regulations, as directed by the Acts of the Fifteenth, and Sixteenth, and Eighteenth, Years of his Majefty's Reign, from and after the Twenty-fifth day of March, One thousand feven hundred and fifty, for and during the further Term of Three Years, and from thence to the End of the then next Seffion of Parliament; and that the fame fhould be paid out of fuch Part of the Old Subfidy as is applicable to the Payment of Incidents: And whereas the Manufacture of coarfe Linens hath been increased and improved in Great Britain and Ireland, and it may reasonably be prefumed, that the Manufacture After the Expiration of the Term for which Boun ties on the Manufacture of fuch Linens may be carried on in Places where the fame hath been established, and elsewhere, without the further Continuance of any fuch Bounty on the Exportation thereof: And whereas, under the Directions of the Commiffioners and Trustees for improving Fisheries and Manufactures in Scotland, fome Progrefs hath been made in Manufactures of Linens in the Highlands of Scotland, for the better civilizing and improving whereof, feveral Provifions have been made in this present Parliament manifeftly conducive to the public Tranquillity and Welfare: And whereas the Encouragement of the Manufacture of coarfe Linens in thofe Parts of the faid Highlands wherein the Manufacture of Linens hath either not been already established, or hath not already been advanced to any confiderable Degree of Perfection, will be a further Means of improving and civilizing the faid Highlands; and the Success of any Provision for that Purpose will tend to the general Good of the whole United Kingdom, and also of Ireland: § 2. BE it enacted by the King's Most Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual Exportation and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Parliament affembled, and by the Authority of the fame, That from and after of British and Irish coarse granted, the the |
