Excerpt from Fact and Fiction About Shakespeare With Some Account of the Playhouses, Players, and Playwrights of His Period

So many attempts have been made to pourtray the character of William Shakespeare and elucidate the text of his works, so much material has been collected and published by explorers in the field of Shakespearean lore, that little remains to be recorded by later chroniclers. In this account of the great dramatic poet and player, I fear I must rely for interest more upon the manner in which I have marshalled my gleanings than upon the matter gleaned.
