A Message to the house by the Clerk to require their attend at the board, The Speak' and house came accordingly and his Hon' was pleased to make the following Speech.

Gentlemen

I had no thoughts of Seeing you untill His Excellency our Governour came into this province which will be the latter end of September, but a warr being declared agst the Indian Rebels of the East and also receiving a letter from his Excellency That he intended to see The Gen' Assembly of the Massa ote 8th Instant Augst in ord to push on a vigorous Warr agst our Eastern Enemys which letter I shall lay before you.

I hope it will be for H Mesty's Service and the good of This Goverment That we [P. 246.] are now mett to consult of and soon

make such resolves as may push on This warr (that we are so forced into) with a hearty willing mind.

Judge there is none among us that scruples the Justice of This warr on our part since the In ians have so often violated Their most Solemn Treatys and Ingagements to us.

I suppose It's generally Thought That The Scout now on the frontiers of this province under ye Command of Majr John Gillman is and has been of service, but in case our neighbours of the Mass make an offensive warr and keep out a sufficient number of men to march to the Enemys head Quarters and also to scour the Sea-Coast at The same time, Then and in such case I hope we shall cheerfully come in to send our Quota of men and joyn with them to putt a Speedy end to this warr.

If such an army be kept moving in the Eastern parts, Then our Scout which I think it absolutely necessary there should be one may be reduced to a Much Small number, Than what we now have and as we shall not at present enter upon any other busyness but that of The warr, I hope you will Take it under your serious consideration and grant such Supplys as may carry on the warr chearfully, and also that the Honour of the Government may be supported, for the accomplishing of which you are always sure of my best Endeavours.

JN° WENTWORTH.

The Speak' prayed a Copy of the foregoing Speech who was answered by His Hon' that the Clerk should Serve him with a Copy Thereof, Then the House wth drew to Their own Chamber.

A Message to the House by George Jeffry Esq with Their answer to The Lt Gov's Speech to be amended wch was returned to The board by Mr Atkinson and Capt Wiggin wth. out any alteration & is as follows.

[P. 249.] May it please your Honour.

In answer To your Honours speech,

Your Honour Having been pleased in your speech at The opening This Sessions To Inform us That a warr being declared agst

The Indian Rebels at the Eastwd who have violated all Their Treatys and made an unjust warr upon us, That it would be necessary for us in Conjunction wth The Massa's to push on a vigorous warr to The utmost of our power and ability we are entirely of your honours opinion, and Therefore shall chearfully concurr in raising such Sums of mony as shall be sufficient To carry on our proportionate part of The said warr. But whereas our Goverment lying much of it fronting upon ye Wilderness from whence The Indians make their fatal Inroads upon us, as this province has formerly felt by wofull Experience and may reasonably Expect The like again, and having lately discovered that some of Their headquarters are not much above a day's March above our Towns, So That whatsoever we can raise in This Government being imployed on our frontiers would not only be a protection to us, but a very great annoyance To The Enemy, and Tend very much to The distressing Them and bringing the warr to a Speedy conclusion, and we are of opinion That our Good friends and neighbors of The Mass will Esteem it a proportionable part in carrying on The warr, and That His Excellency will direct his Commanding officers that may be posted near unto us, To Concert measures wth ours for suppressing and destroying The Enemy as opportunity & occasion may offer. And whereas you hon' was pleased To lay before us his Excellencys letter of ye 13th Currt wherein he directs To Send Seventy men To The Eastward To joyn The Army There we find our Selves utterly unable To Support That Charge and at The same Time To be able to Secure our frontiers and to oppose The Enemy in case of an attack.
