"Ferdinand Verbiest was born at Pittchens near Courtray on the 9th of October 1623, joined the Society of Jesus in 1641, came to China in 1659. (Vide the extract from Couplet's Cat. as above) and died at Pekin the 29th January 1688."*

Sir William Jones was born in London, on the 28th Sept. 1746. Being called to the Bar in 1774, he was appointed a Judge in the Supreme Court of Judicature at Fort William in Bengal in the year 1783. His death took place at Calcutta on the 27th April 1794.

The complete works of Sir W. J. were published in 6 vols. 4° (1799) with a supp. of 2 vols. 4° (1801) containing his contrib. to the Asiatic Researches. His Poetical works were published with his Life in 2 vols. 12°, London, 1807.
