Adrian Reland was born at Ryp, in North Holland, in 1676. He finished his classical Studies by the time he was eleven years of age, and became Professor of Philosophy at Harderwik, when only twenty-four. He removed to Utrecht afterwards, where he became Professor of the Oriental Tongues, and Ecclesiastical Antiquities, and was snatched away by the small pox, February the 11th, 1719, in the forty-third year of his age. Barthélemy d'Herbelot was born in Paris in 1625 and died in 1695.

Claude de Visdelou, was born in Brittany the 12th of August 1656. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1670 and came to China in 1687. He was appointed the 12th January 1708 Apostolic Vicar of Kouei-Tcheou and later on Bishop of Claudiopolis. The part he took in the quarrels which divided the various religious bodies in China at that time and the support he gave to Cardinal de Tournon sent by the Pope as a Pacificator compelled him to leave China the 24th June 1709. P. Visdelou then retired to Pondichery where he died the 11th November 1737.

P. Visdelou was one of the six Missionnaries selected to go to China in 1684. They embarked in March 1685, went to Siam, and arrived in China in 1687. His fellow companions were P. P. Jean de Fontaney (b. 17 Feb. 1643-S. J. (1658)-date and place of death unknown.) Jean François Gerbillon (b. at Verdun 21 Jan. 1654S. J. 1670-d. at Pekin 1707.) "La première éd. de ces Lettres (recueillies par les P. P. le Gobien, du Halde et Patouillet) a été impr. à Paris, de 1717 à 1776, en 34 Recueils qui sont ordinairement rel. en 32 vols. in 12. On ne la trouve pas facilement complète; cependant elle n'est pas aussi chère que la nouvelle édition. Il faut y ajouter 9 vol. des Mémoires des missions du Levant. (Brunet.)
