The first edition has 336 pages in vol. I, and 272 in vol. II; the others have 304 in each volume. There does not appear to be any other distinction between these four editions.'

We hesitate to put any note of our own to this gem; we tried it eight years ago, and a Western Editor took us to task for our presumption. The following notices will give some faint idea of the effect of the production of this jeu-d'esprit : how on earth any one who ever read the book took it au serieux passes comprehension-yet for nearly 50 years that seems to have been the case. Mrs Trollope was, in her day, somewhat like 'Max O'Rell' is in ours; and it would be about as reasonable for English ladies

to take offence at the tales in Les Filles de John

Bull, as it was for the fair dames of Cincinnati to

explode' over the most laughable production of

a humourous Novelist.

"I cannot but recommend to Mrs. Trollope, with all

due humility, the perusal of chap. xiii of St. Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians." HENRY TUDUR: (conclusion of a long notice exposing Mrs. Trollope's fallacies-see no. 1991).

"I inquired of every lady I conversed with in the States, if she had read Mrs. Trollope's book. The wife of one of the professors of Columbia College

was the only female in America who made the acknowledgment of having read it; although I am persuaded that it is generally read by Americans from one extremity of their country to the other." ISAAC FIDLER.

"Mrs. Trollope's volumes contain as much provoca-
tion, whether by commission or omission, as the
mere channel of private literature can possibly
convey." Edinburgh Review.

"It is not much to the credit of the taste of the
British public at the present time, that the
malicious effusions of a disappointed old woman
should pass through three editions in about three
months." RICH: Bibliotheca Americana Nova, 1846.
"We have seldom met with so much talent united to
such sad prejudice." Athenæum.

Trollope, Domestic Manners. The New York edition, eight imitations of Hervieu's plates. 1832 8°, cloth, 6.00; half scarlet calf, gilt, NEWLY BOUND, 6.50; another, cloth, (wanting a plate), with inscription "Presented to CAPTN. MARRYAT by the Publishers, March, 1838," 5.00 [1979

"The work has been reprinted verbatim from the
English edition." But an exquisite preface of seven
pages is added by "the American Editor," who
shall speak for himself. "An English lady, doubt-
less, would scarcely descend to that singular
our author so
minutiæ of painting in which
frequently indulges herself. I allude to the stories
of the "bugs"; the curious description and
innuendoes of the camp-meeting scene; the episode
of the amorous parson; the dialogue between
Miss Clarissa and Mr. Smith, illustrated so happily
by the accompanying plate; and, above all, the
representation of the scene at the theatre, and the
young lady half-dressed at her toilet.
I owe

it to the publishers to state that they had some scruples about perpetuating these gross and indelicate caricatures, but were at length induced to waive their modesty on the occasion." [Of course there is NOT a single indelicate plate out of the 24]. We should like to know the name of this American editor'-we'd have his portrait framed and ticketed "MODESTY PERSONIFIED."
