by Dr. ARMSTRONG, has been steadily working, three evenings a week, since February 13. All students attending this class have to be nominated by Proprietors, and sons of Proprietors are received on specially favourable terms.

3. The Managers have increased the staff of the Institution by appointing Mr. JOHN ELLA Professor of Music. They were led to invite Mr. ELLA to accept the office by the consideration of his successful direction of the Musical Union, and other societies established for the study of classical music, and by the recollection of the attractive and instructive lectures delivered by him, in the theatre of this Institution, during the past fifteen years; and they trust that the Proprietors will derive great advantages from the appointment.

4. A systematic revision of the General Library has been commenced. The Librarian reports that important modern text-books are wanting in most of the classes, but that the regular healthy growth of the Library is necessarily checked by the inadequacy of the present shelf-room. Every available space has been occupied by books, and rules of classification have been necessarily neglected for some time past. Additional accommodation seems to be urgently needed, and the Managers think that this could be provided at a comparatively moderate expenditure by roofing-over a piece of waste ground which lies to the west of the present House, and is already partially enclosed by lofty walls. The cost of the building, however, would certainly exceed any sum that could be drawn from the general funds of the Institution, and the Managers do not feel justified in trenching upon invested capital. The improvement indicated might at once be carried out by means of voluntary contributions from Proprietors.

5. The Library has recently been enriched by three distinct collections of books and pamphlets relating respectively to Prison Reform, Slavery, and General Education. These have been placed at the disposal of the Managers by Miss REW, of Finchley, in accordance with the recommendation of her cousin, Mr. CRAWFORD BURKITT, a Proprietor. They are valuable as sources of minute information on important subjects, and constitute an interesting memorial of Mr. WILLIAM CRAWFORD, the collector, a practical philanthropist, who died in 1847, while occupying the position of Government Inspector of Prisons.

6. During the past year the number of volumes in the Permanent Circulating Library has been increased, by purchases and donations, to 450, and the Managers have consequently been able to reduce the amount paid to Messrs. W. H. SMITH and SON. The number of Proprietors making use of the Circulating Library has been increasing steadily throughout the year.

7. The Musical Lectures given during the season now drawing to a close have been well attended; but the other Thursday Evening Lectures, though delivered by gentlemen of acknowledged ability, have failed to attract large audiences. From a comparison of the afternoon and evening attendances, after deducting from the former the admissions by purchased tickets, it would appear that the earlier hour of meeting is generally preferred, and the Managers incline to the opinion that it might be well to restrict evening meetings to Conversazioni and Musical Lectures.

8. The Courses of Educational Lectures by Professors GUTHRIE and BLOXAM, referred to in paragraphs 10 and II of last year's Report, and the Course on Elementary Botany subsequently given by Professor BENTLEY, were followed by Examinations; and through the liberality of your President, THOMAS BARING, Esq., M. P., and two of your Vice-Presidents, Sir WILLIAM TITE, C.B.,

M.P., and J. P. GASSIOT, Esq., D.C.L., F.R.S., the Managers were enabled to give prizes to the students who passed with the highest numbers of marks. In Physics, EDMUND STRODE gained the first prize, while T. LYON, Miss ESTHER GREAT BATCH, and Miss ANNIE PIPER, obtained second prizes. In Chemistry, A. J. RICHARDSON gained the first prize; ISIDORE Harris and Miss E. M. HUTTON taking the second prizes. In Botany the first prize fell to Miss EMMA BALL, and second prizes to A. J. WALLIS and Miss ELLEN BENHAM. These prizes were distributed on August 10, 1870, by J. P. GASSIOT, Esq., Vice-President.

9. The Educational programme of the present season has comprised a course of lectures by Dr. ODLING on Chemical Action, another by Professor HUXLEY on the First Principles of Biology, and a third, now in progress, by Mr. PROCTOR, On Astronomy. The first and second Courses, which were delivered to crowded audiences, have been followed by Examinations, and the Principal Librarian, who was requested to examine the written papers of the students, has made the following awards :-In Chemistry, first prize, FREDERICK GARRETT; second prize, A. J. RICHARDSON in Biology, first prize, Miss DORA HARRIS; second prizes, A. PERCY LLOYD and Miss L. F. TOLMÉ.

10. The expenses incurred in rendering the Librarian's rooms habitable, and in removing and providing for the books formerly kept in those rooms, have absorbed so much of the funds at the disposal of the Managers, that the general painting and cleansing of the House, alluded to in paragraph 15 of last year's Report, has been postponed. It is hoped that this work may be accomplished during the current year.

April 12, 1871.

THOMAS BARING,

President.
