LECTURE ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE COMING

THE

SEASON.

HE Lecture arrangements for the Season 1871-2 are so far advanced that the Managers are able to indicate the principal features of the programme. At an early date each Proprietor will receive an extended List of Lectures, together with a set of Admission Tickets, affording a separate ticket for each ordinary evening or afternoon lecture.

EDUCATIONAL LECTURES.

These Lectures will be delivered on Mondays at Four o'clock. Each Course will be followed by an Examination for Prizes and Certificates open to all students under eighteen years of age.

First Course, commencing Monday, October 30, 1871. Eight Lectures "On Elementary Physiology," by Professor HUXLEY, LL.D., F.R.S. October 30; November 6, 13, 20, 27; December 4, 11, 18.

Second Course, commencing Monday, January 15, 1872. Eight Lectures "On Elementary Chemistry," by Professor ODLING, M.B., F.R.S., January 15, 22, 29; February 5, 12, 19, 26; March 4.

Third Course, commencing Monday, March 11, 1872. Six Lectures "On Elementary Music," by Professor ELLA, Director of the Musical Union. March 11, 18, 25; April 8, 15, 22.

A Proprietor's tickets will admit One person to each Educational Lecture. A limited number of tickets will be issued to students and teachers unconnected with the Institution at terms to be presently advertised through the public press.

HOLIDAY COURSE.

A Course of Four Lectures, adapted to a Juvenile Auditory, "On the Philosophy of Magic," by J. C. BROUGH, Esq., F. C.S., Principal Librarian in the London Institution, will be commenced on Thursday, December 21, 1871, at Four o'clock, and will be continued on the three successive Thursdays at the same hour. Each Proprietor will be furnished with tickets to admit Two persons to this course.

EVENING LECTURES, PAPERS AND DISCUSSIONS.

Most of the Thursday Evenings allotted to Lectures have been intentionally left open, in order that subjects of passing interest may be taken up as they arise; and also with a view of securing the services of men of note who are unable to make engagements for distant dates. The Journal will give due notice of every fresh engagement.

In accordance with the recommendation of the Annual Meeting, the Committee of Management will offer facilities for the reading of Papers and discussing the same in the Theatre of the Institution. At present they propose to devote four Thursday evenings (December 7, 1871; February 1, March 7, April 4, 1872), to the reading and discussion of suitable papers, and it is believed that this attempt to extend the use of the Theatre will be successful.

The Travers Course.-A Course of Two Lectures "On Science and Commerce: illustrated by the Raw Materials of our Manufactures," by P. L. SIMMONDS, Esq., F.R.C.I., F.S.S., will be commenced on Thursday, November 23, 1871, at Half-past Seven o'clock, and will be continued on the following Thursday at the same hour. This Course will be illustrated by a large collection of beautiful and interesting specimens of Animal and Vegetable Products.

A Proprietor's tickets will admit Two persons to each ordinary Thursday Evening Lecture, to the Travers Course, and to each Discussion.

MUSICAL EVENINGS.

The Evenings of January 25, February 29, March 28, and May 2, 1872, are reserved for Illustrated Lectures on Music. Tickets to admit One person to each of these popular entertainments will be sent to every Proprietor.

CONVERSAZIONI.

The Managers have decided to hold Six Conversazioni during the season; the first on Wednesday, December 13, 1871, and the others on January 17, February 14, March 13, April 17, and May 15, 1872, respectively. No tickets will be issued for these soirées, as the system of personal introduction will be maintained. Each Proprietor can introduce One person to a Conversazione.

The following Lectures will probably be delivered at the Conversazioni of the coming season :

"The Teachings of the Spectroscope," by Dr. WILLIAM HUGGINS, F.R.S., F.R.A.S.
