Hand-book of Investments. -Handbook of Etiquette.-Handbook of Business.--Cassell, Petter, and Galpin. 12mo, 1s.

VERY useful compilations. The first-mentioned shows how purchases may be made in the public funds, Exchequer bills, East India and railway stocks, colonial and foreign securities, mines, banks, canals, docks, and insurance companies, besides containing much useful miscellaneous information and a glossary of technical terms. On the subject of mortgages, and also on that of house property, &c., it may be consulted with advantage.-The Handbook of Etiquette and the Handbook of Business— two others of this series-bear out their claims to be considered both cheap and useful-useful, that is, to those persons who need a book to teach them how to go into business or society; and we presume, from the number of little works of this character, that their name is legion.

The Mission of Elijah to restore all, previous to
Our Lord's Second Adrent. By John Wilson.
Nisbet. 12mo.

68.

THIS series of lectures, now collected into a volume,
was delivered by their author at Brighton about
five years since. Their object, as will at once be
seen from their title, was to assist in forwarding
the Revival movement in that town and elsewhere;
to encourage the tendency among religionists of all
creeds and sects to merge minor differences in a
Common Christianity; and to popularize doctrines
the opposite of those advocated by the authors of
the "Essays and Reviews." They are characterized
by vigorous reasoning, forcible argument, and great
knowledge of ancient history and Biblical research.
Business Life, the Experience of a London Trades-
man. Houlston & Wright. 12mo. 2s. 6d.
THIS useful little book contains many plain and prac-
tical directions for avoiding the snares and pit-falls
of commercial life, and is written in an easy straight-
forward manner, that cannot but recommend it to
the attention of young men entering on business in
London and other great centres of population.

Christian Nurture. By Horace Bushnell, D.D.
Nelson & Sons. 12mo.

THIRTEEN years since Dr. Bushnell delivered, under the title of "Christian Nurture," two discourses, which were afterwards published, and have since gone out of print. The popular favour with which they were received induced their author to enlarge his scheme, and the result is before us. Sixteen essays on the unity, development, and government of a Christian family, interspersed with many valuable reflections on parental authority, infant baptism, Church membership, plays, pastimes, holidays, Christian teaching of children, and family prayer, go to make up a whole that will doubtless become as well known as was the parent pamphlet out of which has grown this interesting, earnest, and well-written volume.

The Principles and Practice of Elocution, considered in reference to the various Professions; being the Substance of a Course of Introductory Lectures delivered at Oxford, by Permission of the Vice-Chancellor, during Michaelmas Term, 1860. By Charles John Plumptre. Oxford and London: J. H. & Jas. Parker. Small 8vo. THIS very full title explains precisely the nature of this small volume. These lectures, though wellwritten and full of good advice as to the management of the voice, the choice of subjects for rhetorical display, the advantages of public speaking, and, more especially, the necessity for a clergyman to be a good reader, seem, after all, to be merely supplementary to their author's advertisement as a teacher of elocution.

The New Life. By Horace Bushnell, D.D. son & Sons.

Nel

THE twenty-three chapters of which this book consists show how dependent man is upon his Maker, and how necessary is faith to the proper carrying out of the design of his being. Setting forth as a text the principle that "God has a definite life-plan for every human person, girding him, visibly or invisibly, for some exact thing, which it will be the true significance and glory of his life to have accomplished," Dr. Bushnell pursues his argument through the various phases of man's existence till a system of living approaching perfection is enunciated and insisted on. As in the author's "Christian Nurture," the teachings of Scripture are plainly and practically set forth in a style at once grave and graceful.

St. Paul in Britain; or, the Origin of British as Opposed to Papal Christianity. By the Rev. R. W. Morgan. Oxford and London: Parkers. 8vo.

THIS volume is dedicated, by permission, to the Bishop of St. David's, and contains an account of the origin of British Christianity as opposed to the Papal system introduced, or supposed to have been introduced, by the monk Augustine. The whole motive of the treatise is founded on the assumption that our religious system is indigenous, grown with the growth of our laws and liberties, and is in no way the product of Romanism. This theory is argued out fairly, and in a scholarlike manner.

Letters on Self-Education, with Hints on Style and Dialogues on Political Economy. By Thomas de Quincey. Hogg & Sons. Small 8vo. 5s. DE QUINCEY'S "Letters to a Young Man whose Education has been Neglected," has so long been a standard work-almost a classic-in the language, that praise would be a superfluity, an adverse criticism an impertinence. To these letters have been added in the present volume the English Opiumeater's Essays on language, style, rhetoric, conversation, superficial knowledge, and political economy. The book is valuable in more senses than one, and ought to form part of every young man's library. No less curious than instructive are the opinions of De Quincey on the principles of Ricardo; but, studied in conjunction with the theories of John Stuart Mill-as shown in his great work, and his later essays on "Liberty," Parliamentary Reform," and "Representative Government"-and with those of Adam Smith, in his celebrated "Wealth of Nations," a fair understanding of the science of political economy may be obtained by all who take the trouble to read carefully and investigate impartially.

We have also to acknowledge the receipt of the Monthly Packet, Vol. XXI., which appears to get more juvenile as it progresses in age, and is even a greater favourite than at first with the younger members of the English Church, for whose use it was primarily intended. From Messrs. Nelson and Sons we have a packet of tastefully got up books, including "The Golden Fountain; or, Bible Truth Unfolded," a book for the young, by the Rev. J. H. Wilson. Dr. Spencer's "Pastor's Sketches; or, Conversations with Anxious Enquirers respecting the Way of Salvation," a volume which will become exceedingly popular amongst earnestly religious people. The Tiger Lily and her Cousin Alia," a pretty little book for children, showing how a bad temper was cured. "The King's Highway," an illustrated volume of stories on the Commandments. Dr. Adolphe Monod's little treatise on the place and power of "The Christian Woman." An exceedingly-interesting volume of religious sketches, en

titled "Village Missionaries; or, Everyone to his Work. A new volume of the Family Treasury; and a volume of Sermons by D. Addison Alexander, of Princeton, which for earnestness and solidity will be found to have few rivals, and is above all remarkable for that kind of pithy composition which hearers can remember and take with them from the sanctuary into the actual every-day requirements of the Christian life. From Mr. Davies, of Birmingham, we have "Garibaldi in Sicily; or, the Adventures of Johnson," a little volume of verses, by Reginald

Charles Oldknow, better in design than in execu tion. 66 A Few Words of Criticism," by Prof. Grote (Macmillans), being an examination of the article in the Saturday Review upon Dr. Whewell's Platonic Dialogues. "Thoughts on Woman and her Education," by Miss Dickinson, Principal of Prestwich College, Manchester. "The Catechumens of the Coromandel Coast," a new volume of Messrs. Parker's Church Tales. "The Macdonald Affair," two pamphlets issued by authority of the Prussian Government.

THE FRENCH BOOK TRADE.

THE adage that "Paris is France" has been so often repeated that we feel inclined to believe that everything bearing the stamp of Paris must have been produced there. Such, however, is not the fact it is not particularly so with the book trade. Paris certainly has been for a long time, and will probably long remain, the centre of the intellectual life of France, and as such it will continue to publish all such books as truly represent the spirit of current ideas. The Paris publishers alone, by means of their position, and in consequence of their extensive relations, can impart success to most publications. It cannot be denied, however, that provincial towns have produced much, particularly in some lines, and that in some parts, too, printing has made great progress, and is still progressing.

There are, and have been for many years, at Lyons, at Avignon, Tours, Lille, Limoges, Rouen, Rennes, what may be called manufactories of Catholic books of prayer, ascetic and educational books. Tours particularly possesses, in the firm of Mame, an extensive establishment of printing, publishing, and binding of this kind of books, which is not equalled in any part of the world for the cheapness and elegance of its peculiar kind of produce.

Some twenty steam-presses, cutting, glazing, and mounting machines, produce, we are told, upwards of 15,000 volumes a day; 700 hands are employed on the premises, and from 400 to 500 out of doors, in the different branches of printing, folding, and binding of the establishment. greatest order and cleanliness prevail among the hands, who have their own societies of providence and benefit, which are encouraged by M. Mame.

The

The towns of Dijon, Aix, Toulouse, Rennes, produce law-books; Lyons and Montpellier, books on medical science.

Many of the books published by Parisian firms are printed in these towns, as well as at Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Moulins, Nantes, Havre, Caen, and at smaller towns in the immediate neighbourhood of Paris-at Corbeil, Evreux, St. Cloud, &c., where work is done cheaper than at Paris, and equally as well. Some printers, Lemale at Havre, and others, print books especially for the markets of South America, where they could not be got up so well nor so cheaply.

Strasbourg, the ancient seat of printing, still excels in the art. Our readers need but be reminded of the beautiful specimens in cromo exhibited in 1851 by M. Silbermann of that town, who obtained the prize-medal. Besides a great many works of average printing, and his serious works of art, he sends forth annually 120,000 sheets of coloured soldiers.

The ancient house of Levrault, now Berger-Levrault, has its main seat at Strasbourg, although it has, as it always had, a house in Paris for the sale of its books. Once famous for its scientific publications -the works of Cuvier, of Cousin, of Descartes, the Dictionnaire des Sciences naturelles, &c.-it has of

late confined itself to military and educational works. The firm publish the Army list (annuaire militaire), the official text-books of the army, particularly works on artillery, such as the Aidememoire, and the great work on the siege of Sebastopol. Their printing generally is above the average of the Paris press; they excel in music-printing, bibles, and Protestant educational books, and have besides a large share in the Government (or administrative) printing, in which they compete successfully with the well-known firm of P. Dupont and Co. of Paris.

Strasbourg was the origin, in 1770, of the famous firm of Treuttel and Würtz, which flourished in Paris and in London, but which, unlike the houses just mentioned, did not combine the two branches printing and publishing, but cultivated only the latter and the book trade generally. Their Strasbourg firm is still existing, and the Paris house is continued under the firm of Jung-Treuttel.

We had written thus far, and intended to note some more of the Parisian firms of eminence, when a police case came under our own notice which may be interesting to readers of the BOOKSELLER, and as it will occupy the remainder of this month's space, we must reserve our remarks upon other houses till the next issue.

Two young men, Renaud and Pineau, aged about 20, who had been for some months in the employ the respectable firm of Messrs. J. B. Baillière and Son, were on the 7th inst. arraigned before the assizes of the Seine for robbing their employers. It appears that Renaud was on the 24th January caught in the act of taking a parcel of books off the premises, but as this was supposed to be an isolated case, he was summarily dismissed. On making inquiry the following day, it was discovered that many books were missing, some of which were found on neighbouring book-stalls, and that more still had been offered for sale. Pineau, who had been out ail day collecting, did not return, and as suspicion also rested on him, both were arrested. They both confessed that ever since October last they had been in the habit of stealing books, which they deposited at the lodgings of a friend, who would appear to have had a guilty knowledge, and that they employed waiters of cafés and restaurants to dispose of the volumes, under the pretence of their belonging to medical students, &c. Amongst the witnesses were several second-hand booksellers, to whom the presi dent of the court addressed a well-deserved admonition, on account of the facilities they afforded dishonest persons in the disposal of books which were evidently quite new and uncut; and as the trade allowance upon medical works in Paris is but 10 or 15 per cent., it was pretty clear that they were aware of property having been stolen. It should be mentioned that dealers in second-hand books are obliged to register the names of the persons of whom they buy, the titles of the books, and the prices paid for them. The accused were sentenced to three years' imprisonment.
