:

An interesting and complicated native-land case in which Sir Walter Buller was involved. He was summoned before the bar of the House, a Royal Commission was set up, lasting for many weeks, and there was much newspaper discussion. Sir Walter published in 1896 his address to the Commission as counsel for Major Kemp (Te Rangihiwinui) and the Muaupoko Tribe in an 8vo pamphlet of 33 pages, followed by another containing his Objections to the Report of the Commission." An opposite statement of the case is given at great length in the Manawatu Farmer and Horowhenua County Chronicle of the 4th March, 1896, stated to be written by Sir William Fox.

MAORI BIBLIOGRAPHY.

GREAT difficulty attends the classification and bibliography of the Maori section.

Many publications were issued without title, date, or imprint; leaflets of different size and date and on diverse subjects were often bound together, and sometimes even those on the same subject were printed in parts and at distant intervals.

The best method of grouping seems to the author to begin with Scripture translation and religious matter generally, as being the first in point of time; and then to follow with educational issues, general literature, and much that is difficult to define. Overlap is unavoidable, and must often necessitate the student's scrutiny.

A method of identification resorted to in the case of many tiresome publications is the use of millimetric measurement (u). This is applied solely to the area of the printed matter-the perpendicular measure including the page-number, and the horizontal a complete-line length.

As also of some assistance, the author suggests the perusal of his paper on "Some Account of the Beginnings of Literature in New Zealand" (Trans. N.Z. Inst., Vol. xxxiii, p. 472), and also a paper by him presented to the Maori Congress in July, 1908 (and printed in their Proceedings), on The Maori Newspaper Literature of New Zealand."

From the first, and especially after the date of colonisation, earnest efforts were made to cultivate in the native a taste for reading and knowledge.

For the advantage of those unacquainted with the Maori tongue English translations are appended to most of the original titles.

A list likely to be useful is given of the Maorified names, with their English equivalents, of places of publication.

Purewa is at the head of St. John's College Creek, and less than a mile below the college (Te Kareti). In 1846, when Bishop Selwyn removed his press and a number of scholars from the Waimate, and during the erection of the college, he fixed his temporary quarters at Purewa, where supplies were readily landed at high water, and where much of his early printing was done.
