IN preparing a Second Edition of the present volumes for the press, my immediate object is to enable the publisher to supply sets of four volumes of "Congregational History" that have often been inquired for of late. The first volume of this work, a long time out of print, it is not deemed to be so necessary to reproduce, not being essentially connected with the history of the Denomination.

It is a source of grateful satisfaction to me that the generous and faithful friends who, from the first, lent their co-operation, have continued true and earnest in their support to the present-their confidence undiminished, and their appreciation of the service rendered, heightened rather than changed. The assurances of fraternal sympathy in my personal affliction, and of growing interest in the history, that I have received from many private readers, is an earnest to me that, under
