Dear Arleigh:

Attached is a brochure outlining the planned corporate structure and major initial program of the Korean Cultural Foundation which I hope to see established by the end of this year.

In brief, I deem the enterprise to be sound, well devised and with inherent capabilities for the accomplishment of great good. I am prepared to take any and all steps necessary to ensure successful execution.

You will note that I have listed your name as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Knowing of your many other commitments, please accept my assurance that I will relieve you of any actual duties other than providing to the Board at perhaps a monthly or bi-monthly meeting your understanding, leadership and guidance. With respect to the day-to-day activities of the Foundation, I will direct appropriate action for the simple reason that the accomplishment of its Objectives will, without doubt, solidify the bonds between our two Nations.

Colonel Curtin, USA (Ret) and Lt. Colonel Pak of the Embassy will request an appointment with you next week to brief you in detail. I will be grateful if you will receive them but even more so if you will honor the Foundation by becoming its President and Chairman of the Board.

Meanwhile, should there be any questions in your mind, or any further information which you may desire, please do not hesitate to phone me on Woodley 6-5786.

When you read this note, Christmas will have passed. Polly joins me in wishing that you and Bobbie have had a wonderful holiday and that the New Year will bring to you both the fullest measure of health, wealth and happiness.

Sincerely,

-chan

Dear Chan:

I have read the draft of your brochure, and it is wonderful. It expresses exactly what I would like to have been able to say. Whoever wrote it did a magnificent job.

I think the whole brochure is wonderful except for one little point which gave me quite a shock. When I was listed as "Pinancier and Industrialist" it reminded me of the story of the inexperienced man who was just appointed a Captain in the Navy, and he was very proud of that fact. His mother told him, "Johnny, I know you're a Captain, your father knows you're a Captain, you know you're a Captain-but do the other Captains know you're a Captain?"

I don't think financiers and industrialists would really include me in their very exalted and limited category. Maybe it would be better if it were stated: "Director of several public service and industrial organizations."

Again, the brochure is wonderful.

Hope to see you soon.

Sincerely yours,

ARLEIGH BURKE

Dear Luis:

Enclosed is a brochure outlining the Objectives, planned corporate structure and major initial program of the Korean Cultural Foundation which is now in course of activation.

In brief, I deem the enterprise to be sound, well devised and with inherent capabilities for the accomplishment of great good. Hence, I have given my name to it and am prepared to take any and all steps necessary to ensure successful execution.

Arleigh Burke and the other officers listed have accepted, with the exception of General Eisenhower to whom an avenue of approach has been established. Francis Hill, our General Counsel has this week been invited to serve as Secretary and a Board Member. So far as the list of Directors and Advisors is concerned, a substantial number have accepted.

Luis, I would be most grateful if you will honor us by becoming our Treasurer and a Board Member.

Knowing your many other commitments please accept my assurance that I will relieve you, in the main, of any actual duties other than providing to the Board at meetings not contemplated to be frequent, your understanding, leadership and guidance. With respect to the day-to-day activities of the Foundation, I will direct appropriate action for the simple reason that I am convinced that the accomplishment of its Objectives will, without doubt, solidify the bonds between our two Nations.

Colonel Curtin who is devoting his entire time and effort to this endeavor is a graduate accountant. In my opinion he is well qualified to carry on our regular fiscal operations. To provide a proper check and balance, however, I would suggest that any single expenditure in excess of an amount which we would agree say perhaps a Thousand Dollars myself.
