The open space at the termination of what is now known as London Road was until 1799 known as Bridge End. In 1800 it was renamed Red Lion Square. On August 1, 1823, the foundation stone of the present Plumptre Hospital was laid. From this circumstance Red Lion Square became Plumptre Square from 1823. In the official plan of the town 1827-29 it is termed Plumptre Square. BRIDGFOOT, 103, 11. Bridge End. This open space is marked Bridge north end of what is known as London Road. LELONDS, 77, 18.-U.
