WILLIAM WAYNFLETE, bishop of Winchester, lord high chancellor of England in the reign of king Henry VI., and founder of Magdalen college in the university of Oxford, was son of Richard Patten, alias Barbour, of Waynflete, a market-town on the sea-coast of Lincolnshire. The father of William Waynflete was called, it should seem, indifferently Patten or Barbour.
