REMARK.-Ne.... que means only, and is not a negative:-Je n'ai QUE trois francs, I have only three francs. 2. INTERROGATIVE VERB. 1. The pronouns are placed after the verb with a hyphen, as reçois-je ? do I receive? 2. The final e mute in the first person takes an acute accent, as parlé-je? do I speak? instead of parle-je? 3. When the third person of the singular ends in e or a, t euphonic is put between the verb and the pronoun, as: parle-t-il? parla-t-elle ? jouera-t-on ? REMARK. For the sake of euphony, the monosyllabic Verbs are not used in the first person of the indicative present. Thus we do not say:-dors-je? do I sleep ?-sors-je? do I go out ?-sers-je ? do I serve?-perds-je? do I loose ?-cours-je? do I run ?-mens-je ? do I lie ?-mòrds-je? do I bite ?-vends-je? do I sell ?-lis-je? do I read ? pars-je? do I set out ?-We say :-est-ce que je dors? etc. But we say -ai-je ? have I?-suis-je? am I?-puis-je ? can I? fais-je? dis-je? sais-je? vais-je ? etc. Conjugation of an Interrogative Verb. IMPERFECT. (That it might be I who speak.) Que ce fût moi qui parl-asse, etc. Que ce fussent eux qui parl assent. (That it might not be I who dance.) Que ce NE fût PAS moi qui dansasse, etc. Que ce NE fussent PAS eux qui dans-assent. 5.-CONJUGATION OF VERBS WITH est-ce moi qui, and n'est-ce pas moi qui? 1 Sont-ce is disagreeable in certain cases; we do not say: sont-ce ceux; but, for euphony, est-ce ceux. 2 Furent-ce eux is intolerable. 2 Seront-ce eur is not more agreeable. VERBS HAVING DIFFICULTIES IN THEIR CONJUGATION. It is very easy to conjugate Verbs which have always the same radical and regular terminations. A great number of verbs, which have several radicals and irregular terminations, present difficulties, and require peculiar observations. I.-VERBS IN er. VERBS ENDING IN cer, ger, yer, e-er, é-er, and THE VERB aller. 1. Verbs ending in cer take a Cedilla under the C, when the termination begins with a or o, as pla-cer, to place: il plaç-a, nous plaç-ons. In like manner conjugate the following verbs: annonc-er, to announce. avanc-er, to advance. exerc-er, to exercise. effac-er, to rub out. commenc-er, to commence. forc-er, to force. The Cedilla prevents the c from being sounded like k. 2. Verbs ending in ger take e mute after g when the termination begins with a or o, as mang-er, to eat: je mange-ais, il mange-a, nous mange-ons, etc. Conjugate thus the verbs: afflig-er, to afflict. chang-er, to change. encourag-er, to encourage. engag-er, to engage. interrog-er, to interrogate. oblig-er, to oblige. venger, to revenge, etc. That e mute preserves to g the soft sound of j. 3. In the verbs ending in yer, y is changed into i when the termination begins with e mute, as employ-er, to employ : j'emploi-e, tu emploi-es, ils emploi-ent, j'emploi-erai, etc.; j'emploi-erais, etc. Conjugate thus the verbs: balay-er, to sweep. pay-er, to pay. nettoy-er, to clean. noy-er, to drown. REMARK.-Envoyer and renvoyer, to send back, make in the future and in the conditional: J'enverrai, etc., j'enverrais, etc.; je renverrai, etc., je renverrais, etc. |
