The Turbervilles, a Norman family, held Beer Turberville and other Dorsetshire lands, and Crickhowell in Brecknock.

A very early branch settled at Coyty in Glamorgan, where Pagan de Turberville is reputed to have strengthened his position by a marriage with the heiress of the dispossessed Welsh lord.

A Pagan de Turberville witnessed the Neath foundation charter in 1179, and another, probably his son, appears in a law suit with Walter de Sully in 1199, and under King John in 1207. He was probably the father of Gilbert, who died before 1281. They held Coyty, and filled a great position in the lordship till the extinction of the male line in or about the reign of Richard II., when Catherine, their heiress, married Sir Roger Berkerolles.

The estates finally descended to William Gamage, whose descendant and heiress, Barbara Gamage, in the 16th century married Sir Robert Sydney, and the Earls of Leicester held Coyty till their extinction in 1743, when the estates were sold.

A fine of 1197 (Vol. I., p. 33) mentions Thomas le Sanford as having married Amable, elder daughter and co-heir of Richard de Kardif, and as with him holding a knight's fee in Hameleden, which was probably in Gloucestershire and connected with Tewkesbury. Jordan was a name in use in the de Kardif and Sandford families, but who Jurdan was is unknown. He may have been a de Cardiff. The charter is probably of the close of the 12th century.
