Royal grant to Ospringe hospital 1) of the gift of Geoffrey of Scominton, land called 'Hokelynge ad capellam' in Sheppey [Scapeya]; 2) of the gift of Roger Godebold of Schepey, 17 'denarate' of annual rent in Sheppey; 3) of the 15 gift of Hugh son of Hodenet, land in Estchurche Sheppey ; 4) of the gift of Philip of Tunstalle 2 'solidate' and 2 'denarate' of annual rent in Leysdon Sheppey; and very many other gifts. pp. 142-146.

This document seems to be a confirmation of the titles to all 20 estates, rents etc. belonging to the hospital, and contains very many names of places and persons.

26. Merton 24 May 36 Hen. [III]. Royal grant to Ospringe hospital of land in Trehannston in the marsh of Rumenhall Kent, 'quam Robertus ffilius Hugonis Trian 25 aliquando tenuit et quam dictus Johannes rex pater noster cepit in manum suam tanquam eschaeto suam de terra Normannorum et eam tradidit Albrico de Marins.' One chaplain to say a mass of St Edward the confessor daily. "Tempore Rogeri Cranefeld magistri.'

29. Westminster 22 Febr. 7 Edw. Patent granting pardon to Ospringe hospital for taking possession of carucate of land in the I. of Sheppey, the gift of Elizabeth 10 daughter of Wm. Nowell, after the publication of the statute of mortmain.

31. Westminster 10 Febr. 4 Edw. [III]. Licence in mortmain to Ospringe hospital to hold certain lands in Wodnesbrigh and Ospringe, given by certain specified 20 donors, to the annual value of 20s., part of the 100s. of rents for which they received a licence from the king's father pp. 151, 152. 32. Langedon 1 Sept. 19 Edw. [II]. The licence in mortmain to the value of 100s. named above.

33. Westminster 26 Oct. 36 Edw. [III]. Licence in mortmain, in consideration of 10 marks paid into the hanaper of chancery by John of Seggeuill and Robert of Wynpole parson of Kirtlynge, empowering them to make 30 over certain lands and tenements in Cambridge, Toft, Brumee [Bourne ?], Hornyngesey and Trumpton to the hospital of St John the Evangelist, Cambridge.

34. Westminster 1 Jan. 23 Edw. [III], 'anno regni nostri Anglie xxiij, regni vero nostri Francie decimo.' 35 Gunnora Hokyng of Ospringe made over to John Dryelonde and Robert Barletott and they conveyed to John Whately, land in Ospringe held of the king 'in capite per

servicium trium solidorum ad scaccarium nostrum annuatim reddendorum.' The king forgives their neglect of duty in not asking for his licence, and allows Whately to assign the land to Ospringe hospital, which is to pay the 3s. into the exchequer yearly.

35. Westminster 24 May 28 Edw. [III], 'anno regni nostri Anglie vicesimo octauo, regni vero nostri Francie quinto decimo.' Licence in mortmain. Edward the king's father granted to Ospringe hospital a licence in mortmain 10 of 100s. To carry this grant into effect Thomas parson of Wyuelesbergh and others are permitted to assign to the hospital lands in Newenham, Bucton Vndertheblen, Ospringe, Chartham, Le Blen.

36. Westminster 9 May 23 Edw. [III], 'anno regni nostri Anglie vicesimo tercio, regni vero nostri Francie decimo.' Pardon to Gunnora Hokyng of Ospringe for entering upon a messuage on which 18d. yearly was due to the king without his licence. Hereafter she is to pay 201 3s. yearly.

37. Westminster 24 Sept. 8 Edw. Patent confirming a former charter dated 16 Febr. an. regn. 4. At the request of the king's father Edward Ospringe hospital had granted 'quandam sustentacionem' to Robert le Messager 25 of Newenton who is now dead; the king confirms the perpetual exemption from such burdens which he granted to the college 16 Febr. an. regn. 4. Tempore Johannis Lenham magistri.'

38. Reding 12 July 21 Edw. [III], 'Leonello filio 30 nostro carissimo custode Anglie......anno regni nostri Anglie vicesimo primo, regni vero nostri Francie octauo.' In order to carry into effect his late patent granting to St John's hospital Cambridge a licence in mortmain to the annual value of 100s., the king permits various donors to 35 make over to it lands in Clavering, Langeley, Cambridge, Gransete, Badburham, Horningeshey, in full satisfaction of the 100s. aforesaid pp. 157, 158.

39. Westminster 25 Jul. 2 Ric. [II]. Charter of inspeximus and confirmation in favour of Ospringe hospital, reciting two charters of the king's grandfather Edward III, one of which recites a charter [pp. 158-160] 5 dat. Westm. 27 Jan. an. 51 regni of Henry [III], which itself recites a prior charter of the same Henry [in the register pp. 148-150, above n. 28 pp. 163–5] renewed for this reason: quia...predictum sigillum mutatum est, cartam predictam de verbo ad verbum innouari et eam impres10 sione sigilli nostri quo vtimur ad instantiam fratris Elie

The charters of Edw. III are dated Westminster 26 Febr. an. regni 12 and Westminster 24 Sept. an. regni 8. By the former [pp. 160-1] he grants to the master and brethren: quod ipsi et eorum successores magistri et fratres hospitalis illius imperpetuum sint quieti de omnibus 30 auxiliis contribucionibus et tallagijs, que ab ipsis ratione terrarum tenementorum et reddituum ac bonorum et catallorum suorum hospitalis illius per nos vel heredes nostros aut balliuos seu ministros nostros vel heredum nostrorum quoscumque ad opus nostrum vel ipsorum heredum 35 nostrorum exigi [MS. hered. which is marked as corrupt, on p. 165 the same charter has exigi in this place] poterunt in futurum, et quod quandocunque clerus regni nostri aut Cantuariensis prouincie decimam seu aliam quotam de bonis suis spiritualibus, vel communitates comitatuum 40 regni nostri aut ciues et burgenses ciuitatum et burgorum
