THE following translation in Romanized Persian of the book which charmed most Englishmen in the years of their boyhood is published with two objects. In the first place I offer it as a text-book to those who may wish to acquire a colloquial knowledge of the Persian language. In the second place I publish it to further a cause in which I am much interested, and to which any leisure that I may have for the pursuit of oriental literature will henceforth be consecrated; namely, to the substitution of the Roman alphabet for those hitherto employed in the languages of the East. Referring my readers to the second part of this Preface for some remarks on the application of the Roman alphabet, I proceed in this chapter to explain the origin and character of the following translation as a text-book of colloquial Persian. a |
