JERRY A. MOORE, JR.

I was born June 12, 1918 in Minden, Louisiana. My education was received in the public schools of Minden, La., Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia, and Howard University, Washington, D.C. Post graduate studies were pursued at The American University, and the University of Southern California.

Shortly after completing my seminary studies at Howard University I was employed in 1943 by the United Service Organization as Assistant Manager and Program Director in the city of New Orleans, La. Thousands of service men and women came under my supervision. From this job I gained valuable experience in managing physical services and recreation programs. I resigned this job to accept the position of Boy's Work Secretary at the Drydas Branch YMCA in the same city. In this work I was responsible for developing and managing character building programs for more than 3,000 elementary and high school boys.

My next employment was with the Port of Embarkation of New Orleans. I held the title Personnel Relations Officer. My specific assignment covered on-thejob problems for about 5,000 Negro employees who were engaged in jobs related to the war effort in Europe. Each of the above jobs was held within a period of thirteen months. From the last assignment I was called to serve as Assistant to the Pastor of the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. In 1946 I was elected pastor of the congregation. For 23 years my major duties as leader of the congregation have been administration, preaching, counseling, teaching, and visitation.

My life has been devoted to the people of the city of Washington. I have served on the boards of many community agencies . . . YMCA, Urban League, Washington Bible Society, Opportunities Industrialization Center, Northwest Settlement House, Area K, Commissioners' Youth Council, Citizens for Better Public Education, Mayor's Committee on the Handicapped. Through these groups I have gained valuable insights concerning a variety of problems. Such groups as the Northwest Settlement House, and Uplift House of Area K, CYC, located in low income areas, have brought me to the heart of human need. I helped to found the Washington branch of Opportunities Industrialization Center for training unskilled people in useful jobs. For two years I have served as representative from Northwest House to MICCO. My participation in Health and Welfare Council's Crime and Delinquency section has kept me aware of problems about crime. In these projects and many others of a religious nature I have devoted time in search of ways to improve the lives of people in the District of Columbia.

I am a member of the Republican State Committee of the District of Columbia. In 1968 I served as an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention, Miami, Florida, and was nominated as a presidential elector by the Republican State Committee of the District of Columbia. I am a member of the Nominating Committee.

I am married to the former Ettyce H. Hill. We have two sons-Jerry A., III, a Navy Ensign, and graduate student in political science, University of Wisconsin; and Juran D., a senior at Wilson High School, Washington, D.C.
