that the nation may thereby acquire additional credit, power and fecurity, have unanimously refolved to give and grant to your Majefty, your heirs and fucceffors for ever, the faid rates and duties upon falt, and upon red and white herrings, by the faid last mentioned act of the eighteenth year of your Majefty's reign, continued for the term of fix years, fubject nevertheless to be redeemed by parliament: and do therefore most humbly befeech your Majefty that it may be enacted; and be it enacted The duties by the King's most excellent majesty, by and with the advice upon falt, and confent of the lords fpiritual and temporal and commons in and red and this prefent parliament affembled, and by the authority of the rings, made fame, That from and after the expiration of the term of fix years, perpetual; for which the faid rates and duties were continued by the faid act of the eighteenth year of his Majesty's reign, the feveral and refpective rates and duties upon falt, and upon red and white fubject to the herrings, fo by the faid laft-mentioned act continued, fhall be rules, &c. of and are hereby granted and made payable unto his Majefty, his 18 Geo. 2. c. §. heirs and fucceffors for ever, fubject nevertheless to redemption by parliament; and that the fame fhall be managed, raifed, levied, collected, fecured and paid, in fuch manner and form, and by and under fuch powers, authorities, penalties, forfeitures, provifions, reftrictions and regulations, for managing, raifing, levying, collecting, fecuring and paying the fame, and with fuch allowances for prompt payment, and for waste on salt carried coaftwife, or to Ireland, and for fish, beef and pork exported to parts beyond the feas, and with fuch other allowances, and with fuch drawbacks or debentures, on account of duties paid or fecured to be paid, for falt exported to parts beyond the feas, as are particularly mentioned in the acts recited in the faid act of the eighteenth year of his Majefty's reign, or in any other act now in force, relating to the faid feveral rates and duties; and that fo much of the faid act, and of the acts therein recited, and of every other act as is now in force, and as relates to the managing, raifing, levying, collecting, fecuring and paying of the faid rates and duties, or the faid allowances, drawbacks and debentures, fhall be and remain in full force and effect for ever, as fully and amply to all intents and purposes as if the fame were particularly recited, expreffed and enacted in the body of

this act.

II. Provided nevertheless, and be it enacted and declared, Duties on falt That the duties on falt arifing and payable in that part of Great in Scotland Britain called Scotland, are and fhall be fubject to the fame or fubject to the charges by the like charges thereon, in the fame manner as the fame duties 5 were liable or fubject to by an act made in the fifth year of the reign of his late majefty King George the Firft, (intituled, An act for fettling certain yearly funds payable out of the revenue of Scotland, to fatisfy publick debts in Scotland, and other uses mentioned in the treaty of union; and to discharge the equivalents claimed on bebalf of Scotland, in the terms of the fame treaty; and for obviating all future difputes, charges and expences concerning thofe equivalents) any thing in this act contained to the contrary notwithstanding. III. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid,

That after all the orders of loan made forth in pursuance of the faid act of the eighteenth year of his prefent Majefty's reign, together with all intereft due thereupon, fhall be fully discharged and fatisfied, or money fufficient thall be referved for that purpofe, all the monies which fhall from time to time arife at the receipt of the exchequer, as well of or for the faid rates and duties by the faid act of the eighteenth year of his present Majesty's reign continued, as of or for the rates and duties by this act granted and made perpetual, fhall be carried to and made part of the fund commonly called the Sinking Fund, and fhall and may be iffued and applied in fuch manner, and to fuch uses and purposes as other rates, duties, revenues and incomes, compofing the faid fund, are or fhall be directed by authority of parliament to be iffued and applied, and for no other use, intent or purpose whatsoever.

An act for granting an aid to his Majefty by a land tax, to be raised in Great Britain, for the service of the year one thousand seven hundred and fifty three. EXP. At 2 s. in the pound.

CAP. VI.

An alt to oblige hips more effectually to perform their quarentine; and for the better preventing the plague being brought from foreign parts into Great Britain or Ireland, or the ifles of Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Sark, or Man.

WHEREAS it is necessary that fome provision be made by parliament, for obliging hips and perfons coming from places infected with or frequently fubject to the plague, to perform quarentine in fuch manner as hath been or shall be ordered by his Majefty, his beirs or fucceffors; and for punishing offenders therein in a more expeditious manner than can be done by the ordinary methods of law; be it enacted by the King's most excellent majefty, by and with the advice and confent of the lords fpiritual and temporal and All veffels, commons in parliament affembled, and by the authority of the perfons and fame, That all thips and veffels arriving, and all perfons, goods goods coming and merchandizes whatsoever, coming or imported into any from places from whence port or place within Great Britain or Ireland, or the ifles of the plague Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Sark or Man, from any place from whence his Majefty, his heirs or fucceffors, by and with the brought, fub- advice of his or their privy council fhall judge it probable that ject to perform qua the infection may be brought, fhall be obliged to make their quarentine in fuch place and places, for fuch time and in such fuch places as manner, as hath been or fhall, from time to time, be directed fhall be apby his Majefty, his heirs or fucceffors, by his or their order or orders made in his or their privy council, and notified by proclamation, or published in the London Gazette; and that until fuch fhips, veffels, perfons, goods and merchandizes fhall have

respectively performed, and be discharged from fuch quarentine, no fuch perfon, goods or merchandizes, or any of them, fhall come or be brought on fhore, or go or be put on board any other ship or veffel, in any place within his Majefty's dominions, unless in fuch manner, and in fuch cafes, and by fuch licence as shall be directed or permitted by fuch order or orders made by his Majefty, his heirs or fucceffors, in council as aforefaid; and that all fuch fhips and veffels, and the persons or goods coming or imported in, or going or being put on board the fame, and all fhips, veffels, boats and perfons receiving any goods or perfons out of the fame, fhall be fubject to fuch orders, rules and directions concerning quarentine, and the prevention of infection, as have been or fhall be made by his Majefty, his heirs and fucceffors in council, and notified by proclamation, or published in the London Gazette as aforefaid.

II. III. [1753 orders made, plague; or when any order or orders is, are or shall be made officers to go by his Majefty, his heirs or fucceffors, concerning quarentine, off to the vel- and the prevention of infection as aforefaid; as often as any ship or veffel fhall attempt to enter into any port or place in Great Britain or Ireland, or of the ifles of Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney, Sark or Man, the principal officer of his Majefty's cuftoms in fuch port or place, or fuch perfon as fhall be authorized to fee quarentine duly performed, fhall go off, or cause some other person to be by him appointed for that purpose to go off to fuch fhip or veffel; and fuch officer, or other person authorized to fee quarentine performed as aforefaid, or the perfon fo by him appointed for that purpose, shall, at a convenient diftance from fuch fhip or veffel, demand of the commander, mafter or other perfon having charge of such ship or vessel; and fuch commander, mafter or other perfon having charge of fuch fhip or veffel, fhall, upon fuch demand, give a true account of the following particulars; that is to fay, the name of such ship or veffel; the name of the commander or perfon having charge thereof; at what place or places the cargo was taken on board; what place or places the fhip or veffel touched at in her voyage; whether fuch places, or any, and which of them were infected with the plague; how long such ship or vessel had been in her paffage; how many perfons were on board when the faid (hip or veffel fet fail; whether any and what perfons, during that voyage on board fuch fhip or veffel, had been or fhall be then infected with the plague; how many died in the voyage, and of what diftemper; what fhips or veffels he, or any of his fhip's company, with his privity went on board, or had any of their company come on board his fhip or veffel in the voyage; and to what place fuch fhips or veffels belonged; and also the true Contents of his lading, to the best of his knowledge: and in case it shall appear upon fuch examination or otherwife, that any perfon then on board fuch fhip or veffel fhall at the time of such examination be actually infected with the plague, or that fuch fhip is obliged to perform quarentine, in fuch case it shall and may be lawful to and for the officers of any of his Majesty's fhips of war, or any of his Majesty's forts or garrifons, and all other his Majesty's officers whom it may concern, upon notice thereof given to them, or any of them refpectively, and to and for any other perfon or perfons whom they thall call to their aid and affiftance, and they are hereby required to oblige fuch thip or veffel to go and repair to fuch place as hath been or fhall be appointed for performance of quarentine, and to use all neceffary means for that purpose, be it by firing of guns upon fuch ship or vessel, or any other kind of force or violence whatsoever; and in cafe any such ship or vessel shall come from any place vifited with the plague, or have any person on board actually infected, and the commander, mafter or other perfon having charge of fuch fhip or veffel, fhall conceal the fame, fuch commander, master or other perfon having charge of such ship or vessel, shall be adjudged guilty of felony, and fhall fuffer death as in cafes of

IV. V.
