Although GT&R provides only aircraft tires and brakes to the DOD, its subsidiary, Aerojet General, has been one of the major manufacturers of anti-personnel mines, rockets and cluster bomb systems, as well as traditional demolition bomb components. Aerojet General also produced the Stage II motor for the Minuteman ICBM, and components of the Sparrow air-to-air missile.

Although Chrysler sells the DOD forklift trucks, engines and automotive spart parts, its largest military contract in recent years was for production of America's standard heavy tank - the M-60. The company's FY71 funding increase was in part due to greater procurement of this tank and its M60A1E2 version. Chrysler has also held the contract to operate the Gateway Army Ammunition Plant, which was reactivated specifically to meet Vietnam demands for 175mm. artillery shells.

Northrop is a major supplier to the DOD of such munitions as tear gas and anti-personnel flechette projectiles. It was, in fact, one of three primary contractors for development of flechette projectiles

(with Whirlpool - which has since dropped all such contracts and Olin). Page Communications Engineers, a company subsidiary, has been the largest communication contractor in Indochina, providing work on the Integrated Wideband Communication System.

Most of Northrop's military funding, however, has resulted from production of the F-5 Freedom Fighter, a relatively simple air superiority/attack aircraft which is purchased by the DOD for friendly countries that want modern aircraft but cannot support or do not need tóp line fighters such as the F-4. Northrop produced the F-5 during the early and mid-60s, and recently won the contract for a successor, which has been designated the F-5E.

Texas Instruments has steadily increased its funding from the DOD throughout the past decade - from a FY63 total of $29 million to a FY70 total of $190 million. The company has produced radars and infrared night vision devices used on night reconnaissance aircraft and gunships, and has also supplied seismic intrusion detectors furnished to American ground troops for locating nearby enemy forces. Due to the current interest in these types of equipment, Texas Instrument's prospects for a continued high level of DOD funding appear to be good.

Standard Oil of California has been among the top four suppliers to the DOD of petroleum products during every one of the past ten years. It has ranked #3 (behind Standard Oil of New Jersey and Mobil) among all suppliers of jet fuel during the Vietnam war.

Pan Am rates a number of "onlys" in any discussion of major military contractors. It is the only airline which has consistently been a top contractor. It is the only transportation company which has been listed among the top 500 research and development contractors at any time during the past ten years (ranking No. 16 during FY71). It receives more money from the DOD for air transport than any other airline; the total last year amounting to $42.5 million (as compared to $33.5 million for American Airlines, its nearest competitor). And for the past 18 years it has held the $90 to $100 million per year contract to operate the Eastern Missile Test Range for the Air Force where Minuteman and Poseidon missiles have been tested. This range includes the launch site at Cape Kennedy, support facilities nearby,

and missile tracking stations throughout the Caribbean and South Atlantic stretching as far away as Pretoria, South Africa.

Most of Hercules' military funding has been for producing rocket propellant and explosive material for bombs and assembling projectiles at the Sunflower and Radford Army Ammunition Plants. It has also produced herbicides for the defoliation program in Vietnam and conducted R & D studies on gravel mines. As the war ends, orders for these materials will decline considerably, but Hercules will continue to furnish motors for Minuteman missiles and to build the Sprint missile propulsion system for the ABM system under a sub-contract from Western Electric.

Singer attained prominence among military contractors in FY69, when it acquired General Precision Equipment Corp., a diversified producer of military electronics. Singer-General Precision has conducted computer simulation of small weapons performance and "human factors research," theoretical analyses of human performance in hypothetical combat situations.

A second company division, HRB-Singer, has performed policy research and designed war games for Naval Intelligence. Various Singer divisions have also produced gun fire control systems, navigation systems and components, spotlights, infrared detection systems, Poseidon missile guidance equipment, "Big Screen Night Viewers" and electronic warfare systems.

Thiokol has been a major contractor for Vietnam-related materials and services, primarily through its operation of the Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant in Marshall, Texas, and production of tear gas projectiles at its own facilities in Woodbine, Georgia. However, this company's total receipts from the DOD declined during the decade its FY71 income representing less than half the FY64 level.

Thiokol is now working on propulsion systems for both Sprint and Spartan ABM missiles, and for the
Minuteman III. Substantial funding for these projects appears certain.

Texaco, like Standard Oil of California, is customarily listed among the major DOD petroleum contractors. In fact, most of the contracts of these two companies are held by Caltex, a joint venture.
