volume is necessarily large in proportion; yet where is the man of virtù, with pistoles in his purse, who will not hasten to secure such a treasure? If the day be dull, or the night be long, let these Antiquities of the Arabs in Spain' be a constant, as they will be a cheering companion."—Dibdin. NIEBUHR, B. G. $2.25 O'NEIL, H. Lectures on Painting, delivered at the Royal Academy. Crown 8vo, cloth. London, 1866. $1.00

We cordially recommend to practical art students, an attentive perusal of these Lectures. Whatever diversities of opinion may prevail on the profounder questions of art, counsels derived from experience, have a value of their own, and no artist can be so great as not to be able to learn from them. The Appendix, "On the Value of Portraits to Posterity," is particularly interesting.

REAL LIFE IN LONDON, or The Rambles
and Adventures of Bob Tallyho, Esq., and his
Cousin the Hon. Tom Dashall, through the Me-
tropolis, exhibiting a Living Picture of Fashion-
able Characters, Manners and Amusements in
High and Low Life, by an Amateur. Embellished
and Illustrated with a series of colored prints, de-
signed and engraved by Heath, Alken, Dighton,
Rowlandson, &c. 2 thick 8vo vols., cloth. Lon-
don, 1821.
$12.00

This is an original copy of one of the rival publications which the immense success of Pierce Egan's "Life in London" gave rise to. The colored illustrations are by Alken, Dighton, Rowlandson and other celebrated sporting artists of that day. The author is said to have been John Badcock, who some years previously had compiled what was then termed a "Flash Dictionary," that is, a dictionary of vulgar or slang words. In the extraordinary demand which had arisen for "Life in London" books, this rival to Egan's great original obtained a fair share of popularity. In some respects the text of the counterfeit is more amusing reading than the original. It contains a trifle less of those charming words of the ring and the stable which characterise the conversation of Pierce Egan's "bloods" and "pinks," and therefore we may be very thankful; but the living "pinks" and "bloods"- the bon ton-who subscribed to "Tom and Jerry," thought otherwise. They relished the "flash," the "St. Giles Greek" with a gusto which we cannot now enjoy, and therefore the meed of praise was given to the original. This work was issued in sixpenny numbers by Messrs. Jones & Co., of Finsbury Square, the successors of the famous Lackington, who, we doubt not, would have been shocked at the very idea of such a book.

Much of the opposition that this work has met with originates, beyond doubt, in the notion that philosophic truths, founded upon irrefragable proofs from the hand of nature herself, are hostile to religion. This we conceive to be a very mistaken view of the matter. Allowing-what we presume no one will be foolish enough to deny that this world is the work of One, the Omnipotent, what can be more plain than that in His wisdom and benevolence He has spread before us a book written with His own hard, which He meant us to read and understand? If such had not been His purpose, would He have given us reason? would He not rather have limited our intelligence to something, above the brutes perhaps, yet insufficient to comprehend the mysteries of creation? Surely it is an ungrateful acknowledgment of His bounty, a stubborn defiance of His will, when we refuse or neglect to employ those gifts of mind or body with which it has pleased Him to endow us. So far, therefore, from thinking that such inquiries should be met by the cry of irreligion, we are as convinced as we can be of anything, that they are the best and purest returns we can make for all His goodness, and that no worship can be so acceptable in His sight as the worship of the understanding. The author of the " Vestiges" has endeavored to show that the great Creator, having once fixed the laws by which all creation was to be governed, had never since interfered with the workings of His own will-or in ecclesiastical language, that there is no special Providence. There is, we must honestly confess, something, to our apprehension, exceedingly sublime and beautiful in this idea of an unchanging and unchangeable Omnipotence; but on the other hand, we conceive that such a doctrine is opposed to Revealed Religion; and that— firstly, the author of the "Vestiges" has not made out his point-and secondly, that it is at variance with the Scrip

tures.

"It is certain that the tragedies of Voltaire are the
works of an extraordinary genius, and that only a great poet
could have produced them.
The plots of some of
them are admirably contrived, the diction of all is pure and
animated; in most passages it is pointed, and in many it is
striking, grand, impressive; the characters are frequently
well imagined and portrayed. Nor are there wanting situa
tions of great effect, and single passages of thrilling force."-

Next to a portrait, the autograph of a great man is the most valuable notice of him. There cannot be a more ap

propriate illustration of history and biography than this col-
lection; and it is impossible to doubt that it will rank among
the most popular, since it is among the most interesting
works of the day. The various autographs are engraved with
singular distinctness and precision, and are perfect fac-similes
of the originals. In the biographical illustrations much in-
formation is condensed into a small compass. The book is
in every respect well arranged, and should find a place in
every library.
