JOHNSON, CAPT. C. The History of the Lives and Actions of the most famous Highwaymen, Street Robbers, &c., to which is added a genuine Account of the Voyages and Plunders of the most Noted Pirates. 8vo, boards, 514 PP. Edinburgh, 1814.

This compilation is remarkable as quoting De Foe's Life of Colonel Jack as a genuine autobiography! Strange it is that the inimitable style of the author of Robinson Crusoe could not at once have been detected by an author of any experience, even if he had never met with any of De Foe's obscure sketches. Besides many old stories of highwaymen, &c., we have in this collection the memoirs of Captain Roberts, of Eugene Aram, and of Barrington the Pickpocket.

Of the numerous exalted characters who have at various periods enlightened the world, none have deserved better of his country and of mankind than Samuel Johnson. Useful in every relation to the society which he adorned, amiable as a son and a husband, faithful as a friend, and zealous as a citizen. To the endearing charities of domestic life he added the exertions of a mind the mighty labors of which astonished his contemporaries, and continue to astonish posterity. During the early part of his life Johnson had to struggle with every species of difficulty; he felt the anguish of absolute want and the bitterness of undeserved neglect, and to these severe trials were superadded the pangs of a diseased body, and the agonies of a morbidly sensitive mind. That a man so circumstanced should preserve his integrity unsullied and his heart uncontracted by selfishness or misanthropy, would be extraordinary; but that he should at the

1813

There is much power and many scintillations of geniu the works of the early English dramatists, and of these Ma singer holds the first place. To the critic, who fondly dis to the unity of time and scene, who insists on camia purity of diction in the dialogue, and probability of incide in the plot, who would put genius in the go-cart, and ragash all its movements by the rules of Aristotle, Massinger the writers of his school have no attractions But to candid mind, that delights in beholding the first efforts: the giants of our literature, there can be no higher enjo ment than in doing justice to the great talents of those th by their intellectual achievements, prepared the way for Bard of Avon. To writers who trod in the same path, ani not unfrequently with equal power, we wholly deny t meed of praise, or bestow it with a tardy hand. Surely then must be some prejudice in this! We admire Othelis King Lear, not because we keenly feel their astonishing beauties, but because our forefathers admired them; and wi consign A New Way to Pay Old Debts and The Dukr Milan to oblivion, not because we perceive their defects, be because we have never read them.

PETTIGREW, T. J. History of Egyptian Mummies; and an Account of the Worship and Embalming of the Sacred Animals by the Egyptians. Curious Colored Plates. 4to, boards. London, 1834. $6.00

Mr. Pettigrew, who distinguished himself in the disenrolment of these singular remains of the haut ton of Egypt, and deciphering the hieroglyphics that accompany them, has in this volume collected numerous facts on the custom of embalming human forms, sacred animals, &c., and the vari-·| ous modes of disposing of the dead in other times. The Persians, Arabs, Jews, Ethiopians, and many Christians practised similar modes of preserving the deceased, either in honor or from affection. Burning the remains became common in many nations, and in some the bones were pulverised; northern nations froze them for preservation, they also buried them in water. Others enclosed them in plaster, which they painted in a kind of fresco to represent the deceased. Honey and wax were used in preservation. Sepulture in the earth, however, has pretty generally prevailed over other customs; and the modes by which affection or respect were so demon. strated, have been well superseded by sepulchral monuments, and the infinite variety of memorials, particularly in the modern melancholy luxury of ornamented grounds.
