THE Annual Catalog for the year 1905 is the first annual supplement to the initial permanent volumes of the American Catalog series of the twentieth century. It resumes the form of the Annual Catalog of 1900 for reasons connected with the plan of the permanent five-yearly volumes. These permanent five-yearly issues have worked out on a two-volume plan, the first volume of which is an actual cumulation into one alphabet of the short-title entries by author, title, subject and series, and the second volume an association of the five separate alphabets of the full-title entries with descriptive notes, an alphabet for each year of the period. The present annual publication is in two similar parts, the short-title entries for 1905 corresponding to the first volume on the five-yearly plan, and the full-title entries, with descriptive notes, for 1905, corresponding to the second volume on the five-yearly plan. The first alphabet of the present volume will be superseded by a cumulation into one alphabet for the five years of the second period, 1905-1909, and there will possibly be a cumulation at a mid-period, but not each year. The second alphabet, however, is arranged for permanent preservation, so that at the end of the five years the several Annual Catalogs may be taken apart, the short-title alphabets discarded, and the five full-title alphabets bound together to make the second volume of the new five-year period. It is hoped that this volume for the year 1905, covering comprehensively the information afforded by The Publishers' Weekly for that period, will serve all the purposes of the booktrade and under the plan outlined for the five-yearly issues will afford the maximum of convenience at a minimum of expense.
