Research disclosed that additional migratory bird species not previously listed occur in the United States and are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This necessitated a revision in the list of birds protected by Federal law. Over 10,000 copies of Wildlife Leaflet 486 were printed and distributed to apprise the public of the extention of Federal protection to certain birds

6. The National Law Enforcement Workshop program is the most important part of Management and Enforcement cooperative training assistance. This program was emphasized during fiscal year 1969, with 19 workshops being conducted to train 225 Bureau and 420 State officers.

7. Waterfowl breeding grounds surveys covered nearly 70,000 lineal miles in fiscal year 1969 to determine the size of duck breeding populations, habitat conditions, and production. The attached map illustrates the locations of these surveys which include all major breeding habitat areas of the North American continent. During this period, a "show-me" trip was conducted for State and private wildlife organization officials and newspaper writers to explain the waterfowl survey procedures and provide an on-site inspection of current waterfowl production conditions.

8. Duck banding in Canada during August and September emphasizes mallards and blue-winged teal, however, all species are banded when captured. program compared to previous years follow:

9. Roadside surveys to determine the status of mourning doves and woodcock are conducted annually. In fiscal year 1969, nearly 600 mourning dove call-count routes in the contiguous United States and 1,044 woodcock singing grounds routes in the eastern half of the United States and Canada were conducted.

10. During a special hunting season for teal ducks in September 1969, 345 hunter observations were recorded to obtain information on the species composition of the harvest, crippling loss of teal ducks, and the ability of hunters to abide by the teal-only regulation.

11. In fiscal year 1969, over 1,000 copies of Special Scientific Report--Wildlife No. 122, "Waterfowl Status Report 1968," were published and distributed.
