La description de Marco Polo «est reproduite, écrit le R. P. Brücker (Etudes, 20 nov. 1907, p. 554, note), avec des modifications et des additions empruntées à d'autres voyageurs, dans Relatione della gran citta del Quinsai, et del Re della Cina, di Contugo Contughi All' Illustrissimo Sig. Luigi Gonzaga. Cette dernière relation « qui n'est connue des plus savants bibliographes (Marsand, Amat di San Filippo, Cordier) que comme manuscrit, a été publiée dans la seconde partie du Tesoro politico, du moins dans l'édition italienne-latine (la seule que j'aie pu rencontrer), qui a paru à Francfort, en 1617-1618, sous ce titre Philippi Honorii J. U. D. Thesaurus politicus, hoc est, Selectiores tractatus, monita, acta, relationes et discursus... Opus collectum ex italicis cum publicis, tum manuscriptis variis variorum Ambassatorum observationibus et discursibus... concinnatum... La relation de Contughi, en italien et en latin, remplit les pages 466-483 du second volume (Continuatio) de ce Thesaurus. L'» illustrissime seigneur Louis de Gonzague « à qui elle est adressée » de Casal, 16 Juin 1651, n'est autre que le jeune saint si connu. L'auteur dit qu'il la lui dédie, pour avoir remarqué » combien, malgré son âge si tendre, il se délecte (si diletti) de cosmographie et combien il y fait de progrès, non moins que dans les autres sciences. Louis avait alors seize ans ses historiens, qui n'ont pas mentionné cette dédicace, ont cependant constaté aussi son goût pour les sciences même naturelles (H. Chérot, dans les Etudes, 1891, t. LIII, p. 267). D'ailleurs, dès ce temps-là peut-être, ce n'était pas la seule curiosité qui lui faisait prendre tant de plaisir à la cosmographie « il ambitionna de suivre les traces de son grand compatriote, le P. Ricci, dont Contughi signale précisement les premières tentatives pour pénétrer au coeur de la Chine. » Le R. P. Brücker a l'obligeance de me signaler que Melzi, Dizionario delle opere anonime e pseudonime, à l'art. Honorii (Phil.) et Tesoro politico, dit que l'original italien du Thesaurus politicus (compilation composée sur tout de relations d'ambassadeurs vénitiens) où la relation de Contughi a été imprimée, a paru, au moins la première partie, en 1593 pour la première fois par l'Academia Italiana di Colonia (?) et rééditée à Milan en 1600; puis que la seconde partie (où se trouve la relation de Contughi) a été ajoutée en 1601 (Milan).
