THE AUTHOR of this work had contemplated many important additions to it; and, had his life been spared, his purpose would have been fulfilled in this edition. Still, some valuable papers which he left with a view to publication have been introduced; and his wishes have thus in some degree been carried out.

A hope, therefore, is entertained that this little work will maintain the position which it has so long occupied in public favour.

A CONSIDERABLE PORTION of the present edition has been rewritten, several new chapters added, and the whole work revised with great care, and with an anxious desire to make it as useful as possible.

It has been a great object so to arrange the contents that they may be readily got at, and, to aid the reader still further, a copious index has been appended.

If anyone should think that the author has entered too much into details, he has only to observe that this was done at the request of a missionary in Caffreland, and, from communications which have been received since the first edition was published, he cannot regret that he
