This magnificent reconstruction reflects careful translation and sensitive scholarly research. Readers will be struck by a great adventure story as well as Columbus's own sense of marvel. There are details of the voyage as well as passages at times poetic on endless searching, geography, human nature, etc. There are, too, excellent supporting chapters on Columbus himself, on the history of the log, and on the technology of travel in Columbus's day. As compelling for general readers as it is valuable to historians.
