VIII. Weavers are to make all the every piece of linen cloth of equal fineness, and the woof all fecurity to of one fineness, and proportionable to the warp, and every according piece of linen cloth to be of equal fineness and thickness to law. throughout the whole piece, under the pain of the weaver's forfeiting his fecurity, and being disabled to carry on his trade. Also they are to run coarse coloured threads at the end of every piece, for denoting the hundreds and scores of threads in the breadth of the piece, under the pain of forfeiting a fum not exceeding 51. nor lefs than 20s. and to forfeit the like penalty, if he mark the cloth fo as to make it appear to contain more threads in the breadth than it really does c.

WEAVERS are to weave yarn into cloth as agreed, and not to waste, embezzle, or damnify yarn, under the pain of making good the parties damages, and paying a sum not exceeding 40s. nor lefs than 5s. for every offenced.

BOOK V. name or other mark upon linen of his own manufacture; and any perfon counterfeiting fuch mark, is to forfeit 100l. for the use of the person whose mark fhall be counterfeited".

WEAVERS putting yarn of different forts, qualities, and fineness, in the fame piece, otherways than as directed by the act, forfeit a fum not exceeding 40s. nor less than 10s. Yarns of different forts, qualities, and fineness, may be used for stripped, chequered, or flowered linens, each fort of yarn being of equal quality and fineness throughout each piece, under the penalty of 40s. upon the weaver,

EVERY weaver or manufacturer of linen, flaxen, or hempen cloth, may exercise his trade within any city, town, corporation, burgh, or place in Scotland, without being hindered by any person whatever, and without being chargeable or charged with any entry-money, or other duty whatever, for or in respect of his following his faid trade.

IX. ALL dyed yarn wrought into chequered linen, handkerchiefs, tickings, or Bengals, is to be of a fufficient dye that will hold in washing. Linen cloth bleached with lime, pigeons dung, or soap dregs, is to be forfeited.

ALL dealers in linen cloth, before felling, or expofing the fame to fale, are directed to carry the fame to the stampmafter to be inspected, marked, lapped up, and stamped. None is to be lapped up when wet or damp, nor with chalk, duft, or flour, under the pain of forfeiture of the cloth.

No linen cloth is to be fold, exposed to fale, packed up for fale, or in order to be sent or carried by land or water, or entered for exportation by sea, till first stamped, under

the penalty of 51. for each piece on the feller, &c. and as much on the buyer. Perfons authorized by the trustees, or any justice of peace or magiftrate, may search for, seize, and bring to trial, all unftamped cloth. Such unftamped cloth is to be forfeited, and the poffeffor or owner of the warehouse, cellar, fhop, or other place where found, fined in 51a.

UNMERCHANTABLE or infufficient cloth brought to be Infufficient stamped, is to be forfeited to the ftampmafter, and cut into pieces, not exceeding fix yards in length. But if damnified through unavoidable accidents in the weaving or bleaching, it is to be cut by the stampmafter into fuch pieces as are fufficient, and these ftamped, and the infufficient cuttings returned to the owner; but if the cloth fhall be damnified or rendered infufficient through the negligence or ignorance of the weaver or bleacher, it is to be forfeited.

THE warp yarn of plain linen cloth is to be of the fame Warp yarn. quality and fineness throughout fuch warp, and the woof yarn to be also of the fame quality and fineness throughout Woof. fuch woof, under a penalty not exceeding 40s. nor less than the weaver. Each fort of yarn used for striped, chequered, and flowered linens, is to be of equal quality and fineness throughout each piece, under the penalty of 40s. upon the weaverd.

THE bleaching of linen cloth is the fubject of various regulations.

ANY perfon affixing, or caufing to be affixed, ftamps in imitation of Scots, upon foreign linens, forfeits 51. for every piece. Any person affixing, or causing to be affixed, on foreign linens, any stamps, required by law to be put on British linens, or ftamps in imitation thereof, is to be pilloried, and forfeit 50l. or imprisonment for twelve months'. Any perfon felling, expofing, or packing up for fale, foreign linens, knowing them to be thus falfely ftamped, forfeits 51. for every piece. And forfeits alfo the linens'.

WHEN cloth feized for wanting ftamps is alleged to be importa foreign, the owner to prove that the fame was fairly imported from the place of its manufacture, or the next adjacent port, and that the duties were paid; and, if he fail in such proof, the cloth to be forfeited ".

ALL Irish cloth imported into, or exposed to fale in Scotland, wanting the Irish stamps, are to be forfeited, and seized and tried as Scots ".

THE duty on foreign raw linens imported was taken off for fifteen years. But fuch linen yarns must be entered at the cuftomhouse, landed in prefence of the customhouse officers, and the importation made in British, Irish, or American vef

fels; on failure of which, they are liable in duties P. This ftatute granted a bounty on the importation of British and LINEN Irish linens, and was continued by various ftatutes *.

CLOTH.

GOODS in private cuftody are to be depofited, by a certain day, in the king's warehouses, and the bonds thereupon to Goods in private be delivered up; the drawback on exportation paid; and cuftody. the goods not to be delivered out again but for exportation. Goods expofed to fale, or found in private poffeffion after the faid day, may be feized, and the offender to forfeit 2001. Goods feized under this act, are to be carried to the next customhouse after condemnation, to be exported.
