From the burn mouth, the parish goeth three myles south and by west. At the House of Boyne, is a publick house, called Scots Miln of Boyne. There's a bridge on the said burn of one arch.

Two myles from that, is a dwelling place belonging in old to the name of Ogilvy, now to the Earle of Findlater, call'd Bankhead: the old house is demolished.

A quarter of a myle from The Burn of Boyne to the west, and from that to the south-west a lyke distance from the burn, is a house called Culphin, formerly depending on the laird of Boyne, now belonging to the Earle of Findlater: but it is now demolished. Above that are great mosses, and a large moor, to the east ; the mosses, south and west. From which, half a mile, is a dwelling-house, called Blairmad, belonging in old to the name of Gordone, (the house now demolished,) and now to the Earle of Findlater.

Bordering with that land, half a mile, is a dwelling-house, and small baronie, belonging now to Rothemay, called Baldavie before and now, of the name of Ogilvy, standing on The Burn of Boyndy, south-east. South-west from that, is a dwelling-house, belonging to the name of Stewart, call'd Ordnies,2 hard by the house of Baldavy. Ordnes depends on the Earle of Findlater now, formerly belonging to the laird of Boyne.

From that to the north-east, is a dwelling place called Cairntowne, belonging lately to the name of Hacket, now to the Earle of Findlater. North-east, one myle from Ordnies, south from Cairntoune, is, to the east-south-east, a barren muir, wherein is an old moss, one myle from a dwelling called Reatie, long since belonging to the name of Dun, now to the Earle of Findlater, standing near The Burn of Boyndy, to the south-east. From that is a barren muir, one myle, called Dallachy, belonging to the Earle of Findlater. There is a great deal of lymestone in that land, and in most places in the parish of Boyndy.

Below Dallachie, to the south-east one furlong, is a litle loch without fish ; and from that, half a myle north-east, is a barren muir, wherein are two lochs without fish.

The church of Boyndie stands one myle north-west from Banf.'

In the midle of the parishes of Boyndy and Fordyce, there's the marks of ane old stone dyke, divyding The Boyne in Thaindome, so called, (lying towards the sea to the north and east), and The Forest of Boyne, (lying south and west). The Thaindome belonged of old to the lairds of Boyne: The Forest, to an old family of the name of Hay, lord Forest of Boyne, now extinct. The heiress of which family, long since, was married to Huntly; by which marriage the Earle of Huntly got The Forest of Boyne, as yet holding of Huntly, and the lands of Einzie in Banffshire, bordering with the Earle of Findlater, with the house lately called Bogue of Geith, now Gordone Castle. That estate, which came to Huntly by the marriage above named, yields about fourty thousand merks yeerly. Gordone Castle is eight myles west from Cullen; and Cullen is from Banf to the northeast eight myles, keeping the King's highway.

["To the west of the old church, on the rocky eminences on the north side of the road, two circular encampments may still be traced. Immediately below the upper one, on the southern declivity, stands a large perpendicular stone, surrounded by a causeway. A little beyond this, on the opposite side of the road, not far from the site of the old mansion house of Buchragie, may be traced the huge remains of what may have been a camp. A short Roman sword was found in the bogs of Reattie. In the immediate neighbourhood of the manse offices, on the west side, a stone coffin was found a number of years ago. Three Druidical circles are in the parish: one, near the parish church; another, within a mile to the north-east; and a third, on the farm of Bankhead. Near the north-east corner of the wood of Whyntie is an artificial mound, known by the name of The Gallows Cairn. On the farm of Dallachy, below the old road, five or six urns, containing the remains of bones, were found a few years ago. They were of rude construction, except one, which is said to have been well shaped, ornamented with diagonal lines crossing each other, and surmounted by a lid and handle. The adjoining houses were built on a reputed Elf hillock. Another similar urn was found a few years ago at the base of a small circular mound, at the lower extremity of the plantation extending from Craig-herbs to the turnpike road." "The parish had the honour of giving birth to Thomas Ruddiman, the eminent Latin grammarian. Here also was born a personage whose fame is of a different character, Mrs. Buchan, the founder of a religious sect in the west of Scotland." (Ibid.)

"The county of Banff, and the parish of Boyndie, have the credit of Ruddiman's birth. In October, 1674, he was born on the farm of Raggel, in the barony of Baldavy. Margaret Simpson, his mother, was the daughter of Andrew Simpson, who occupied the farm of Little Ratie in the same parish. His father was James Ruddiman, who was born in the parish of Alva, but removed to the farm of Raggel, which was the property of Mr. Ogilvy of Baldavy. James Ruddiman was long remembered for his agricultural knowledge, as a farmer, and for his seasonable charity, as a neighbour. When he heard of the demise of
