The same Alexander of Saint Clare, son of Thomas of Saint Clare, received from William earl of Ross, a grant of the davach of Bray, in the marage' of Fornewyr, in Invernesshire. (Registrvm Magni Sigilli Regvm Scottorvm, p. 76.)

Thomas of Saint Clare appears as a witness to a charter by William earl of Ross to Henry Stewart, and Mariot his wife, of the land of Kennachrowe (Kenerove) and Strathury (Strawery), cum omnibus bominibus eandem terram habitantibus,' lying in the 'marage' of Delgany, the earldom of Ross, and the shire of Inverness; dated at Delgany, on the first of April 1362,"testibus Dofnaldo Dei gracia abbate de Nova Ferina . domino Symone priore de Bello Loco Hugone de Ross et Johanne de Ross fratribus nostris Johanne de Haya domino de Tolibothuille Thoma de Sancto Claro et aliis. In an old calendar of a lost roll of decrees in parliament is, "Resignacio aduocacionis ecclesie de Philorthe in Buchane domino Regi per Hugonem comitem de Ross data apud Perth xxix. Martii M CCC XXX . (Acts of the Parliaments of Scotland, vol. i. app. I. p. 153. Edinb. 1845.) King David II., on the eighteenth of October 1345, gave his consent as patron of the benefice, to the erection of the church of Philorth into a prebend of the cathedral of Saint Machar at Aberdeen. (Registrum Episcopatus Aberdonensis, vol. i. pp. 76, 77.) But the contemplated erection was not then made; and, on the twentieth of July 1347, the King granted the church to the bishop and chapter, to be applied by them to their own proper uses, as one of their common churches. (Id., p. 79.) This grant was renewed on the twentieth of January 1362, with the alteration, that the fruits of the benefice should be applied to the maintenance of two chaplains serving in the cathedral. (Registrvm Magni Sigilli Regvm Scotorvm, p. 76.) On the sixth of September following, Bishop Alexander of Kyninmund, provided that the salary of these chaplains should be ten pounds yearly; that the vicar serving the cure at Philorth, and making his residence there, should have the altarage of the church, with a manse and garden; that he should pay yearly, to the common procurator of the chapter, forty shillings for the common use of the canons in residence; and that the rest of the fruits should be at the disposal of the dean and canons of the chapter, to whom the right of presentation to the vicarage was declared to belong. (Registrum Episcopatus Aberdonensis, vol. i., pp. 99-101.) Soon afterwards, the church appears to have been erected into a prebend of the cathedral. (Id., vol. ii., p. 253.) In the year 1437, the prebendary of Philorth was required to find a subdeacon (to whom he was to pay forty shillings yearly) as his vicar or 'stallar' to serve in the cathedral. (Id., vol. ii. p. 66.)]
