Stanihursti Dubliniensis de Rebvs in Hibernia Ges-
tis, lib. i. p. 33. Antverpiae 1584.)

The importance of fortified places of refuge in the
middle ages was such, that we find Roger of Scale-
broc, a great lord in Carrick, towards the end of the
twelfth century, granting to the monks of Melros,
a toft under his castle of Grenan, where they might
place their goods and chattels : "et toftum subtus
castellum meum de Grenan ubi possint res suas
et catalla reponere." (Liber S. Marie de Melros,
tom. i. p. 27.)

*By an oversight of the transcriber, the follow-
ing passage has been omitted from the text, in the
Lessons for S. Ternan's day. It follows the word
"Albaniam" p. 54. line 8.: "Conuecturius autem
qui terre illius principatum tenuit Beatum Terna-
num cum multitudine qui secum venerant aspiciens
sic alloquitur: Hypocrite quid in terra mea que-
ritis Sanctus respondit: Salutem tuam querimus
ut Deum cognoscas et illi soli seruias. Dixit au-
tem Conuecturius: Hec subdola desine verba di-

eo recedente pes ipsius Conuecturii lapidi in quo
stetit ita adheserat ut auelli non poterit cumque
pro eo Sanctus orasset liberatus et baptizatus est."

In the middle of the sixteenth century, a copy of
the Gospel of S. Mathew, believed to have been
given to S. Ternan by Pope S. Gregory the Great,
was preserved at Banchory S. Ternan, with other
relics of the Apostle of the Picts (Registrum
Episcopatus Aberdonensis, vol. i. p. lxxxvi.) The
same work preserves another deed regarding "the
bell of Sanct Ternen callit the Ronecht" (vol. i. pp.
327, 328.). Several instances of the devotion in
which consecrated bells were held in Scotland, have
been collected in the Liber Collegii Nostre Domine
Glasguensis, pp. xxiv-xxvi. To these may be added
the following note (for which I am indebted to the
learned Professor of History in the University of
Edinburgh) of a charter by King James VI., in the
Register of the Great Seal, of the fifteenth of Septem-
ber 1572, setting in feu to Donald Dewar the forty
penny lands of Garrindewar in Strogartney of Men-
teth: "que olim pro pulsatione unius campane coram
mortuis personis infra parochiam de Kilmahug
tempore papismatis fundate et dedicate erant
nunc in manibus nostris devenerunt ratione altera-
tionis status religionis et abolitionis servicii predicti."
