Barningham, at the present day. The Domesday form is Berningham, and the Inquest forms the same, and Bernyngham. But the form Bermingham is by no means uncommon in ancient deeds and other records.

* Arkengarthdale. I have met with the form Arklegarth as late as the reign of James I., and there is a hamlet in the parish which bears the name of Arkletown. The preservation of the old form here and in the North Riding Records is not without its interest.
