Note.-The copies of this Bible, which have been minutely described, vary in several particulars, mostly relating to the title-page and dedication. Some of the issues of this edition have an English title-page and a dedication to Charles 11, and it is stated that most of the copies with this dedication were sent to England. In some copies, the title-page is in both Indian and English. The present copy has it in Indian only, and it wants the dedication.

The New Testament of the different issues has a separate title-page, as follows:-"Wusku Wuttestamentum Nul-lordumun Jesus Christ Nuppoquohwussuaencumun [star] Cambridge: Printed by Samuel Green and Marmaduke Johnson. MDCLXI." The "star," whose place is indicated above, is a diamondshaped ornament composed of thirty-two printer's flowers, which is wanting in some issues. In some copies of the New Testament, in Luke, the heading at the top of the page, which has Chapter XXI, reads "x;" and for Chapter XXIV, the numeral is "xv." These errors are corrected in the present copy; but, in correcting it apparently, the last letter in the catchword on page L was pushed into the margin, and it stands thus: "waabe h." This is said to occur in all copies where the headings have been corrected. These last two peculiaritics are, accordingly, not confined to the second issue with the English title-page, as O'Callaghan (p. 9) affirms.

Following the New Testament are the Psalms in Indian metre, translated by Eliot, from the Bay Psalm-Book, without a separate title-page, but with a heading as follows: "VVame Kethomae uketahomaongash David." The last four pages of the Psalmis and the two pages containing a short Indian catechism, wanting in this copy, have been supplied in manuscript fac-simile from the copy in the Library of the Massachusetts Historical Society.

A full and exact account of Eliot's Indian Bible may be found in F. B. O'Callaghan's "List of Editions of the Holy Scriptures printed in America. Albany, 1861." See also: Thomas, "History of Printing." The

collation of the present copy agrees exactly with that given by O'Callaghan on page 6.

Different statements are given as to the extent of this edition- some placing it at one thousand copies; some at two thousand. Less than twenty copies are known to be in existence in this country. The copy sold at the sale of the late John Allan brought 855; it was bought by a bookseller, who is said to have sold it subsequently for $1,000. These are said to be the highest prices recorded for copies of this rare book. M:mus'se Wunneetupanat mwe up-Biblum God naneeswe Nukkone Testament kah wonk Wusku Testament. Ne quoshkinnumuk

Note. This is the second edition of Eliot's Indian Bible, and the above title is that of the whole Scriptures. The apostrophe in the first word of the title is not found in the copy in Harvard College Library, nor in the title as given in O'Callaghan.

The title-page to the New Testament is as follows: "Wusku Wuttestamentum Nul-lordumun Iesus Christ Nuppoquohwussunencumun. Cambridge, Printed for the Right Honorable Corporation in London, for the propogation [sic] of the Gospel among the Indians in New England. 168)." After the New Testament follow the Psalms in Indian metre, as in the first edition, without separate title-page, but with the following heading: "Wame Ket zhomae uketzhomaongash David." Next come two pages of the catechism in Indian.

The collation of this copy corresponds with that given by O'Callaghan, page 13 et seq., who copies in full the dedication to the Honorable Robert Boyle, signed by William Stoughton, Joseph Dudley, Peter Bulkley and Thomas Hinckley. It is said that the present is the only copy of the second edition containing this dedication, which heze occupies the recto of the second leaf. The edition is said to have been 2,000, and perhaps twenty copics are known to exist in this country. Eliot himself superintended the publication of this second edition, and was assisted by the Rev. John Cotton, of Plymouth.

Note. This book was first called the "Bay Psalm. Book," but was afterwards known as "The New Eng. land version of the Psalms." Prince, in a MS. note to his catalogue, says it is "Ye 1st Impression of ye NE version." It was printed in Cambridge by Stephen Daye, and was the first book printed in British America, "The Freeman's Oath," a broadside and a small "Almanac" alone preceding it.

Prince, who published in 1758 an edition of the " Bay Psalm Book," revised and improved, says in his preface: "By 1636 there were come over hither near thirty pious and learned ministers, educated in the universities of England; and from the same exalted Principle of Scripture, Purity in Religious Worship, they set themselves to translate the Psalms and other Scripture Songs into English Metre, as near as possible to the inspired Original. They committed this work especially to the Rev. Mr. Richard Mather of Dorchester, the Rev. Mr. Thomas Weld, and the Rev. Mr. John Eliot of Roxbury, well acquainted with the Hebrew, in which the Old Testament, and with the Greek, in which the New, were originally written. They finished the Psalms in 1640, which were first printed by Mr. Daye, that Year, at our Cambridge."

There are in the Prince library two copies of this rare book, one of which (21.15) is complete, with the exception of a slight mutilation of the "Finis" leaf, and the absence of the following leaf, which contains on the recto a list of "Faults escaped in printing." The other (21.14) which alone has the book-plate of the "New England Library," has a small part of page Ee supplied in manuscript, and is otherwise complete. There were originally three other copies in this collection.

A second edition, somewhat amended (of which we have no copy), was published by Daye in 1647. After which the work was revised by President Dunster and Richard Lyon. For an account of this revision, see below.

The collation of the first edition is as follows:Throughout the book there are no folio or page numbers. Title-page, with ornamented border; verso blank. Preface, twelve pages, and seven lines at the close, printed, shortening at each end, on the thir teenth page, the fourteenth being blank. "The Psalmes" beginning on page "A," which follows. At the head of nearly every left hand page the word "Psalm" is spelled correctly, and on nearly every opposite page it is spelled "Psalme." The book abounds in typographical errors and improprieties. The last verso printed page has, after the word "Finis," fifteen lines headed "An admonition to the Reader," which relates to the tunes suited to the Psalms. On the next page is a list of errata, eight in all.

In 1862 an exact reprint of this first edition was printed at the Riverside Press in Cambridge, under the care of Dr. Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, who prefixed a preface containing an account of the book. One copy was printed on parchment; five on India paper; fifteen on thick paper (of which the Public Library of Boston has one), and fifty on common paper. The highest price at which a copy of the original book is known to have changed hands is about five hundred dollars. See, beside Dr. Shurtleff's preface, THOMAS'S History of Printing, 1, pp. 231, 233, 466.

Note. Prince, in his MS. catalogue, calls this "The New England Psalm-Book." It is the fifth edition of the revision of the "Bay Psalm Book," by the Rev. Henry Dunster, President of Harvard College, and Mr. Richard Lyon, who had been "probably brought up at one of the Universities in England," as Prince says. After the second edition of the original "Bay Psalm-Book" had been published in 1647, Dunster and Lyon were appointed a committee further to revise and improve the Psalms, a service which they completed in "two or three years." Their edition was first published in 1650, with the addition of Spiritual

This version went through numerous editions in this country, and was reprinted in England and Scotland, finding use in many of the Dissenting Congregations in England, and in a number of the churches in Scotland.
