KERL'S METALLURGY by CROOKES and RÖHRIG.

Complete in 3 vols. 8vo. with 625 Woodcuts, price £4 198.

A PRACTICAL TREATISE ON

METALLURGY,

Adapted from the last German Edition of Prof. KERL'S Metallurgy

BY

WILLIAM CROOKES, F.R.S. &c. and ERNST RÖHRIG, Ph.D. M.E. Each Volume may be had separately:

VOL. I. comprising Lead, Silver, Zinc, Cadmium, Tin, Mercury, Bismuth, Antimony, Nickel, Arsenic, Gold, Platinum, and Sulphur, with 207 Woodcuts, price 31s. 6d.

VOL. II. Copper and Iron, with 273 Woodcuts, price 368.

VOL. III. comprising STEEL and FUEL, with a copious SUPPLEMENT and 145 Woodcuts, price 31s. 6d.

A very large amount of valuable information is contained in this book; and every worker in metals who desires to know the processes adopted on the Continent would do well to possess it.' ATHENEUM.

'So complete a treatise on the metallurgy of copper as that contained in Messrs. CROOKES and RÖHRIG's adaptation of KERL's great work has not hitherto been attainable by the English student of metallurgy; and as it is probable that less is known of the metallurgy of copper than of that of most other metals in ordinary use, this work will prove a really valuable acquisition to those interested in converting the copper ores, wherever found and of whatever quality, to the best commercial advantage. It will prove useful alike to the practical mine agent and to the smelter.' MINING JOURNAL.

'This work will be especially valuable to the practical metallurgist, as it affords not only minute statistics of the composition of the metallic ore before, during, and after the different processes of reduction, but in many instances the actual figures of cost of each; enabling the metallurgist to compare the relative merits of each system, and adopt or modify them as his own wants or in

"This seems in all respects an admirable work, and will without doubt take a high and permanent place in technological literature. KERL's treatise has for a long time been the highest authority with metallurgists acquainted with the German tongue, and except for its great bulk would have before this been translated into English. The present work is however more valuable than a mere translation. The English Authors have judiciously omitted a considerable portion of the German text relative to assaying, and have supplied its place with descriptions of new processes for the extraction of metals.' ELEMENTS OF CHEMISTRY,

THEORETICAL AND

PRACTICAL.

By WILLIAM ALLEN MILLER, M.D. D.C.L. F.R.S. &c.
Professor of Chemistry in King's College, London.

PART I.-CHEMICAL PHYSICS, Fourth Edition, price 15s.
PART II. INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Fourth Edition, price 218.
PART III.—ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Fourth Edition, price 24s.

The most important changes in the Fourth Edition of PART III. which is now ready, consist in the introduction of the metrical system of weights and measures concurrently with our own, and in the statement of the temperatures on the Centigrade scale as well as on that of FAHRENHEIT, and in the uniform adoption of the new form of notation and of the nomenclature originally introduced by BERZELIUS.

Chemical Physics, the major portion being occupied with those departments of physics of most interest to the chemist, namely, molecular forces, physical conditions of matter, crystallography, double refraction and polarisation of light, temperature, and specific and latent heat. All of these important subjects are treated with a copiousness of matter and clearness of style that leaves nothing to be desired. In the SECOND VOLUME, the properties of the elementary bodies, and of their inorganic combinations, are fully described and the most recent information relative to them given. Indeed, in this and the other parts of his work, the Author has proved the extent of his reading by the immense number of his references to the most recent investigations of both British and foreign chemists and physicists. The work may therefore be fairly regarded as a faithful mirror from which is reflected the present aspect of Chemistry and the cognate sciences. In the THIRD PART OF Volume-which is also the largest-the important department of Organic Chemistry is almost exhaustively treated.' DUBLIN QUARTERLY JOURNAL of MEDICAL SCIENCE,

'Dr. MILLER'S Chemistry is a work of which the Author has every reason to feel proud, and which we are certain that his publisher must find very satisfactory, a new edition being called for and eagerly purchased every third year since the first publication of the work in 1855. It is now by far the largest and most accurately written treatise on Chemistry in the English language; and, excepting in the department of analysis, it contains more information relative to that science than most medical practitioners and students ever require to learn. PART I. (which comprises a volume) is wholly devoted to

BROWNING'S

NEW LARGE

AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC LAMP

In this lamp both carbons are moved by the electricity of the battery employed (without the aid of clockwork); the light remains uniform in height, and more steady in action than any of the expensive regulators previously introduced. From 25 to 50 quart Grove's cells, or the same number of 2 quart Bunsen's, should be used with this lamp.

RESEARCHES ON DIAMAGNETISM AND MAGNECRYSTALLIC ACTION;

INCLUDING THE QUESTION OF DIAMÁGNETIC POLARITY.

With Six Copper-Plates and numerous Woodcut Illustrations. 8vo. price 14s. THIS work embraces the Author's researches on the new manifestation of magnetic force termed by FARADAY DIAMAGNETISM. It begins with an examination of the deportment of crystalline bodies between the poles of a magnet. It proves Diamagnetism, like magnetism, to be an induced and not an inherent force. It examines the attractions and repulsions of magnetic and diamagnetic crystals, and connects their deportment in the magnetic field with these attractions and repulsions. It enters upon an exhaustive investigation of the question of dia

magnetic polarity; contrasts in all their

combinations and manifestations the forces of magnetism and diamagnetism, and shews the antithesis between them to be complete. It thus proves Diamagnetism to be a POLAR FORCE. Finally it applies the doctrine of diamagnetic polarity to explain phenomena which prior to the establishment of that doctrine were not understood.

To these investigations are added a series of Essays, Letters, and Reviews on subjects connected with MAGNETISM and ELECTRICITY.
